Best of the cheap brands under £20 PSU?

I'm after a replacement PSU for an ancient AMD Socket A system, so don't want to spend much at all.

An issue that may cause strain on replacement PSU is a free CPU upgrade that will require a BIOS update. And the BIOS update causes PC to switch on for a second when turn on wall socket power plug. And I'd prefer carry on having PC isolated from power feed when not in use, so burst on/off will be a re-occurring issue.

The cheapest recognised brand I've seen so far was Antec Basiq 350W (more than needed wattage) for £24 on Scan today only previously. But looking at paying less than that.

So out of all the generic brands like EZCool, Alpine, Colors, EZ Cool, Rasurbo, etc. Is any a decent rebranding worth considering? And not likely to go boom due to above issue.

Edit: Was also looking at Akasa, but they were more expensive than Antec Basiq.

Re: Best of the cheap brands under £20 PSU?

    Simple answer, No

Even the Antec Basiq are not very good.

Antec Earth Watts 380mm http://www.scan.co.uk/product.aspx?ProductId=36947 on today only at £36

Another option would be one of the novatech psu's http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...ov-psu500.html dirt cheap because thy are based on a much older cheaper design so are 3.3v and 5v heavy which should be ideal on an old socket A system.
Although a bit dubious to overall quality, even with an older design getting a psu that cheap means corners will be cut.

If it was me, I'd just buy that really cheap casecom one from Ebuyer for under £10.

It is not worth spending alot on old Socket A systems.

That is why I recommended it Maddock, Those Casecom units get good reviews on Ebuyer and are cheap.

Granted they are not going to have the life expectancy or quality of Enermax units but, They will do the job.

Thanks for the suggestions. I never considered going this that cheap.

Did you notice the noise of the unit? As that seems to be regular point of issue on the ebuyer reviews.

I was considering an extra £5 for the 12cm fan model Casecom 350W 12cm Fan PSU in hope that it runs quieter. If anyone has tried both, with the cheaper being Casecom 300W 8cm rear fan

Cheap PSUs do work, and for an older system they are fine - just don't expect them to put out their rated load for hours on end, it's usually an over inflated figure. They might manage it at peak for a few seconds at best.

Buy whatever is reviewed as being quiet enough I would say.
