Re: The Euro, is it now time to join in?

I didn't get the PIIGS acronym until now. Although the first time I'd heard it was this morning on Sky News. There was talk on that new item about Ireland wanting to withdraw from the Euro zone. No-one seems sure if it is even possible, yet alone probable.

Thunder, there is a lot more to it than just the currency, interest rates and economic pollicy for example.

    Worth a read:
    Pound could bounce back

more and more economic data shows that such a large group of economies grouped together could fragment under recessionary pressures.
'The perception that it is stronger is simply not true and certainly isn't as safe as these figures would imply.

'Business confidence in Europe is at a low, especially in areas such as Germany which is at its lowest since 1982. This will increase pressure on the Eurozone, easing the pressure off the pound.

Ovbiously this very moment would not be good as no currency is really stable atm. If i am horrible mistaken feel free to correct me.
Sticking with sterling isn't about sentimental value. One of the arguments of some of those that want change, and sometimes for their own reasons and benefit, use is to portray those that don't want to go into the Euro as europhobes, or insular little Englanders, or those that are sentimental about keeping the Queen's head on the pound. It's a patronising, dismissive argument that's supposed to ridicule those that want to stay out.

There are good reasons for staying out, and most of them are economic and/or financial, but sometimes with some fairly heavy political implications too. There are some good reasons for going in, too. Anyone that tells you it's simple, or that's it's a clearcut decision, or even that it's just about sentiment, is either a liar or a fool. It is a very important political and economic decision, with huge implications over a very long period.

There's a quite a lot of discussion about some of those reasons in this thread, and we've discussed it at length several times before, so if you think it's just about sentiment, I recommend a good read of this thread, and a search top discover previous ones. Believe me, sentiment has nothing whatever to do with my reasons for wanting to stay out, but either way, there are far better arguments than sentiment. If that's all it was about, we'd have been in years ago.

Could we convert to the Euro, and just call it the pound still. A rose by another name....

I just can't see a referundum being won in the UK as we are too attached to our currency. Although that said, it didn't stop other countries with greater pride...

Re: The Euro, is it now time to join in?

While i don't believe we should join the Euro. Aren't we basically already a part of it except for currency? We pay them money (getting very very little in return by the way), people are free to work here, move here travel anywhere in europe from here etc. When we speak of where britain is we say in europe instead of near it. We are basically part of europe just with a shield called the pound.

Personally i feel we should pull all funding out of Europe, put back up the trade barriers and the immigration barriers and sort our own country out before we help out the rest of Europe as well as the rest of the world.

There was a time when Britain owned the world, or believed it did, the same is occuring in America now, how much time will it be ill the Euro goes the same way? Personally id rather we had our own country our own rules our own currency. Long live the queen and long live the sterling!

Whilst some of the concepts of finance baffle me somewhat, I've always thought that if that were to be the case, support for changing to the Euro would increase immediately.

I'm not saying that's a good reason to do it, but for a lot of people, it will be a sentimental reason not to change, because there's a hell of a lot of people that don't understand economics.

I think joining the Euro now, is the best time to join, but that doesn't necessarily mean we should.

Re: The Euro, is it now time to join in?

I'm unsure, I travel a quite a bit and I know people that are self employed who would much rather be on the euro as they say it would help their buisness and economy. But as the pound is often stronger that the euro and the doller and we import far more than we export I am undecided. If we were to join now would be a good time, it would also mean that it would take more to reduce our economy (the goverment cant do it single handedly by running around with their heads cut off).

I would be far more open to inviting europe to the pound or joining the euro if we could negotiate the portrait of the current monarch onto the coins and notes.

Well I don't do fascism, so I definitely say no. There is nothing democratic about the EU. The fact that the country with the biggest population ends up with the most seats in the EU parliament and that country just happens to be Germany is truly disturbing. Have we learnt anything from history.

How about that racism and discrimination leads to another war... as proved in 1920-1930, when we excluded Germany from League of Nations, which resulted (eventually) in sentiments rising to the point where World War II was triggered.

Of course, there's other factors, but the resentment in Germany against the rest of Europe certainly helped it along.
