These splits are only very roughly down population base as well, and the amount of colleges per state goes back to civil war times when some states considered themselves more important than others.
The electoral college votes each state has is based on it's representation in Congress - that is, the number of Representatives in the House, plus 2 for the Senators. And the number of Representatives in the house is based on the population of the state, as determined by a census every ten years.

So the size of the electoral college vote is determined pretty closely by population size, albeit a few years out of date, and indirectly.

It seems Bush is on his way to winning it. However it is interesting that every different American news channel is forcasting it by a different ammount. Fox for example says Bush already has over 270 votes, whilst ABC are still calling it very closely.

I Just cant understand why one of the most advanced countries in the world cannot come up with a legitimate and trustworthy system of voting. Even the electronic systems used to not have a ticker tape print out so that if all else fails they can go back and count the tapes.

Personally i feel let down, the American election hugely affects us, and its sad that people really dont seem to care, and that the americans do not seem to realise they are electing back in a complete fool... to put it lightly.

The election should be done on a 1 person 1 vote basis.
Three states got 75% of the political advertisements this time around.

Ah well. I was right. Not that it's any consolation.

Fingers crossed that evidence of vote rigging shows up soon.

I suspected Bush would win, quite a shame. I hope his next term in office is a better one. Maybe he'll show some humility.

Was reading the BBC news section where people got to send in their opinions. One bloke was saying that outside his polling station there were booklets telling people pretty much how God wanted them to vote. The polling staff did nothing so he took all the booklets, binned them, and poured coffee over them. I wonder which side (if any) left those there
