    Because God told him so...

Interesting story about Blair and the Iraq war in the last couple of days:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4773124.stm

Is Blair trying to use religion as an excuse for his actions? Isn't this the same Blair that criticises others that use religion as an excuse for their actions?

The guys made a huge mistake and he knows it! Why cant these politicians be honest - at work you make a mistake, you own up and learn from it.

anyway which god is he referring to?

It's sort of the ultimate way to shift blame.

You can't punish God if he is behind the Iraq war cock up now can you?

Such bulls**t, turning their mistakes into a 'crusade'

Religion is ridiculous these days (except buddhism)

    George Bush.

I hate it when religion is used to leverage some other goal. Then again, many wars have been waged over religious beliefs.

Guys - to be fair to TB (not that I am a fan of his), he didn't say that God told him to do it, but that he knew he was answerable both to the people of the UK, and to God, for his actions. Making the point that he knew the importance of his decision to go to war, and was (he says) convinced of the justification of his actions. From what I have heard of the interview, he was not in any way suggesting that his religious beliefs provided any justification for his action.

I am just sad that he chose to mention his accountability to God in relation to Iraq (where the 'right' course of action - i.e. according to God - is far from clear) whilst happily acting in other areas (e.g. legislation, conduct of his cabinet, etc) in ways that are contrary to God's stated will for humanity.

blx, Blair involved the UK in this war for nothing more than increased political capital and a bigger personal spotlight on the world stage. The fact that people are dying in ever increasing numbers on all sides may just have begun to sink into the man's skull along with the fact that he has had a large part to play in filling those body bags. It's the price others have had to pay for his self promotion.

Mr Pound told BBC Two's Newsnight that Mr Blair was being "painfully honest" and, as he would not be seeking re-election as prime minister, his comments should be taken as apolitical.

"If this was anything to do with trying to appeal to the electorate, he wouldn't be so excruciatingly honest," he said.
So are we to assume that if he wanted to be re-elected he wouldn't be honest? Though to be fair most of us assume that politicians lie every time their lips move.

Well as a voter in this country I expect the Prime Minister who was democratically elected to be answerable to the people of this country who voted him in first and in HIS god very much SECOND.

His god is not my god and I am sure as hell isn't everybody elses god and our Prime Minister has no right to use his political position as a tool to aid his PERSONAL religious beliefs.

Oh good grief. Now, I hate TB as much as the next man but having sat and watched the interview, there's just no way you could infer either that god told him do it, or as above, that he said that he'd answer to god in priority to the electorate. As to whether he has the right to use his position to further his own beliefs (religous or otherwise) - well, yes he does we elected him(not me tho )- how on earth else do you think he's to come to decision about anything?

Sorry, but the media made this story into the rabid rant that it is, not TB - and (again) as much as I hate the bloke, he didn't do a blues brothers on the telly the other night.

The mere fact that this conversation has taken place is proof that the media and politics rule our lives FAR too much!

It's a forgone conclusion that TB will not be the countries next PM, so lets just leave it at that and try to make amends for the crap that the iraq 'situation' has generated.

I for one have lost total interest

No, he really doesn't have any right. He is our representative and answerable to us he shall remain. We elected him to represent us, not to further his beliefs.

I'm afraid he does - we elected him to make decisions on our behalf - and we can't expect him to do that devoid of any bias or basis on his own beliefs as a person. He was answerable at the last election.. I know I didn't vote for him.
