Should you/Could you tell someone they smell?

Once again today, someone visited my workplace, and they STANK.

    Who should tell them?

Do they know? Do they CARE? Are they even ...dare I say it...PROUD?

Cos frankly soap is cheap, as are basic deodorants, and even with an allergy, there is stuff you can do.

Would you tell someone that they smelled? If you had to work with them, in a close working team. They may well be offended, and is it worth that?

    I hate smelly people.

    Would and have done so.

I told a work colleague who had no idea, guess they were used to their odor and he was most embarrassed, ended up with him using a different more powerful antiperspirant and the smell went away over about a week.

I would tell a friend without doubt. Not so sure about a stranger though and if you are never gonna see them again then why worry?

I currently have this problem with one of the guys who works for me. So far I've tred dropping hints 'It stinks in here, maybe the toilet is backed up', but in a more subtle way. It hasn't worked yet, and that makes it worse, because now if I tell him he'll know I've been hinting at it...

yea if its some one i work with i make a joke about the funk first and if they dont get it i get a little more rude about it.. like this " Damn who hell forgot to wash their a@@" then i look right at them. if the dont put 2 and 2 together then i move to the heavy guns.. "look man you stink! ill buy you some soap and Deodorants if you promise to wear it!" . Oh and bad breath drives me nuts.. i offer them gum and mints and dont talk to them face to face, i turn my head if i have to speak with them

At my old work there was someone who seriously stank. Problem was that because he came in with a bedhead (and not the "fashionable" kind either) we presume it was because he didnt take a shower.

One day he came in without smelling . . . he actually said "yeah, I had a nice shower!" . . . dirty bastard. But by lunchtime he started to reek again . . . unlucky.

Anyway, the smell got to people so badly that us (the temps, he was one too) really wanted to say something but we were advised by a permanent member of staff that we cant because he can file for some silly case of Bullying and Haressment (even though he's just a temp). But we got "authorisation" from our boss to tell him . . . so one of us did.

It didnt seem to come as a surprise to him, he just said "OK, thanks." It wasnt like the guy used any harsh language (we got the diplomatic one to do it) or anything.

Doesnt do any good, he kept stinking and stinking . . . it's a lot worse when he was wearing shorts and t-shirt on dress down days

well, I think if I smelt i would want some1 to tell me, who actually wants to go around stinking? I think if some1 is told they stink and continue to stink then an employer has grounds for dismaissal based on hygine (health and saftey). put it this way, If I had a business and my customers didnt wanna deal with a smelly git then he would be gone. simple.

would do and have done - wasn't nice but had to be done

was running abar, one of the staff turned up & was humming, couldn't have him putting customers (and staff) off their beer, seeing as i was in charge i had no choice but to tell him

i tried to be as diplomatic as possible - didn't make a big deal out of it, waited until he came into the office for some change so was on his own....had a word & offered him a loan of my can of deodourant - he was ok about it, obviously a bit embarrased but he sorted it out & i never had occasion to mention it again

my 2p - i have a crap sense of smell due to smoking & a serious broken nose as a kid, so i'm always a bit para about me smelling

if it were me i'd prefer to be told - sure, i'd feel pretty embarrased but i'd rather that than find out i stink & everyone called me "stinky ben" behind my back!!
if it ain't broke...fix it till it is

An idea might be to say that you are giving off some odour TODAY, not nearly as offensive as you stink all the time, but probably enough to make them think about it for the future.
