of course there is a conflict between science and religion!! one is based on the use of critical reason the other is based on faith. By invoking faith religion attempts to shelter itself from the criticism and makes itself exempt from rational analysis.

as for it being a controlling mechanism well maybe u managed to overlook religions role in feudalism or its obsession with sexual morality, imperialism under the guise of christianity or the rampant sexism and homophobia in monotheist religions.

religion remains as a chain on our souls cos our bodies still remain enslaved.

religion sticks its nose into all human affairs but then gets upset when people criticise it on rational grounds, and reverts back to pathetic and irrational responses like it is personal faith. If i told u i believed in the tooth fairy you'd laugh and rightfully so, you wouldn't say "oh well thats right for you".

The less you are, the less you express your own life, the more you have, the greater is your alienated life, the greater is the store of your estranged being." Karl Marx

    dude, you bloody grass!

also, very well put "of course there is a conflict between science and religion!! one is based on the use of critical reason the other is based on faith. By invoking faith religion attempts to shelter itself from the criticism and makes itself exempt from rational analysis" right on the money as far as I can tell.

if there is'nt conflict with science and religion, why has every major breakthrough been critisised by religion e.g, gravity, world not being centre of the universe etc. Now, I think if we didnt have this irrational idea of religion as a society we would probably be a lot more advanced, integrated and there would probably be a lot less conflict in this world.

also dude, this gun is actually the omnitpotent Mk IV, gaurnteed to stop a deity at 1000 yards!

sorry about touting, but special branch have ways of making u talk ....
they really wanted to pin it on a paddy but they settled for a geordie cos its easier to pin it on someone who doesn't speak english he he

G4z ur spot on about religion having a very negative role on societybut we should keep in mind that religion itself is a product of other problems and is manipulated for economic and political ends. Relgion may play a huge role in Northern Irelands troubled history yet in England no one cares whether u r catholic or protestant therefore it is obvious the the source of Northern Irelands troubles lies in other quarters than some inate theological conflict between Catholicism and protestantism.

well to be quite honest I have no idea why there is friction in NI with catholics and protestants if you would like to enlighten me I would appreciate it. as far as I can tell this conflic its between the pople who want NI to reunite with ireland and those that want to keep it british. very difficult position really because it has been a part of the UK for so long now. personally I couldnt imagine a possible soluttion to it all, but tbh I wouldnt mind if it went back, of course that leaves the problem of the pople living there that supported the UK... tbh got no idea. can tell you one thing tho, things may not have been so bloody if it wasnt all enflamed by religion. I totally agree with you that people manipulate religion for their own agendas, thats why religion is such a problem because basicaly its run by people in reality, not an all powerful god as they would like you to belive.
