of course there is a conflict between science and religion!! one is based on the use of critical reason the other is based on faith. By invoking faith religion attempts to shelter itself from the criticism and makes itself exempt from rational analysis.
as for it being a controlling mechanism well maybe u managed to overlook religions role in feudalism or its obsession with sexual morality, imperialism under the guise of christianity or the rampant sexism and homophobia in monotheist religions.
religion remains as a chain on our souls cos our bodies still remain enslaved.
religion sticks its nose into all human affairs but then gets upset when people criticise it on rational grounds, and reverts back to pathetic and irrational responses like it is personal faith. If i told u i believed in the tooth fairy you'd laugh and rightfully so, you wouldn't say "oh well thats right for you".
