New icore 5 2500k rig build

    Hello Everyone,

Ordered kit to build my new pc - casual gaming, office, photo, music and video encoding use.

I will be using the Intel route for this build and ordered the 3.3ghz 2500k CPU with msi p67a-gd53 b3 rev. Also xfx 6870 1gb gpu.

I plan on overlooking the CPU to around 3.8ghz or to the max limit without tampering with the voltage settings.

I would appreciate if the forum readers can advise on the following please.

    1) What memory I ought to use (ddr3 x2 4gb with 64bit OS).
    2) Which CPU cooler you recommend.

The combined cost of the above should not exceed $100 (pounds).

Also are there significant speed gains if run the OS from ssd drive?

    Thank you.

    1. Overclocking is done through multiplier and not BCLOCK so the speed of the ram doesn't matter. Cheap 1333 1.5V rated ram is all you need, there is little to no world difference paying more for higher latencies or faster speed.

Aria has a cheap set going Mushkin £50, or from scan Corsair daily deal £62.

    2. If you are only overclocking to 3.3 then temps are not going to be a problem. Thermals only start to become an issue at around 4.3-4.7 for the 2500k. You could in all honesty likely overclock that with the stock cooler and have no issues.

Assuming a budget of around £40 then, the hyper 212+ is a good air cooler. Personally I can't stand the mounting system of it, but it is within a few degrees of most other air coolers and cheap at around £20.

If you could stretch your budget then the Antec 620 water cooler is a very well regarded unit, see here amongst others.

    3. If you have a SSD you should definitely be putting the OS on it.

Re: New icore 5 2500k rig build

I'm looking at building a system in the next couple of weeks - this is what i was recommended

    MSI P67A-C45 (B3)
    i5 2500K
i'm doubling my RAM from 4 years ago with 16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance
and for a cooler, i'm going with a Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H60

i should be able to achieve 4.5GHz
