Intermittent front fan issue

It seems the front fan on my unit is faulty

When i boot it up the back and front fans come straight on
the cpu fan takes a couple of seconds to kick in

Then after about 20 seconds the front fan stops
then every few seconds it attempts to turn but wont

as in the title, this is intermittent
sometimes i can power on and all the fans stay on
but half the time the front one stops

Now i have unplugged the fan and put it back in
but it is still intermittent


I did not get a power cable in with my unit
so i have had to take one from an old computer.
The only mod i have made so far is installing an Emu 1616m Pci-e card

I have not checked the wiring coming out of the fan as i dont want to break anything

Could you tell me if it's plugged into a molex connector coming stright off the psu or is it plugged into the motherboard itself?
