Aged 61 so am not up to date with all the technical stuff but I've just finished building my latest PC with i7 950, Asus P6X58D-E motherboard, Antec PSU, 3 x 2GB Crucial RAM, Win 7 64 bit, etc, etc and guess what, I could only get the BIOS to recognise 4 GB of the 6GB of RAM! First time I've ever had this problem.
Tried reseating the RAM, updating the BIOS, moving the RAM around in slots A1, B1 and C1 and although they would all work singly showing 2GB and also up to 4GB, they would not show more than 4GB whatever. Tried calling Crucial but they were still on holiday.
Bet you'll never guess what cured it. Decided to remove the CPU (brand new) and inspect the pins with a magnifying glass. No, they were not bent but it was clear that some had not made proper contact with the socket as they were unmarked. I reckon maybe 10 - 15 of them were like this. I then inspected the socket and found a tiny piece of fluff stuck in it which I removed. I also noticed that the clamp seemed to be putting more pressure at the hinge end than the other end although I couldn't see how to change this without risking damage.
Anyway, put it all back together and it worked perfectly. This after having spent all day looking for a cure.
Can't really believe it was the fluff but could imagine reseating the CPU did it.
Hope this helps someone
