OK, Nice new system arrived containing an HD5870.
Hooked up the system to my flat-panel tv via a dvi-rgb adaptor and every thing seemed ok. However, after moving the system into its final position (and connecting it to a Samsung SyncMaster T220) the fun started (Unfortunately...)
Basic Issue is, when connected to the monitor alone, either via rgb adaptor or native dvi, the screen has a tenedency to "skip" while there is a lot moving... This is particually noticeable under google earth (when it starts up and revolves the globe, you can see what should be the right edge of the screen move to the center for a split second, with a grey vertical line to the right - this repeats until the globe annimation stops, making for a flickering effect). That coupled with a BSOD or two starts to get annoying... (The BSODS were reasonably generic MEMORY_MANAGEMENT & SYSTEM_SERVICE btw)
First thought was, "something be bust" (or words to that effect) So, I've tried the drivers on the pc initially, the recommended drivers for XFX's website and the drivers from windows update.
None of those helped - while trying to troubleshoot it, though, I plugged the tv back into the other dvi output of the card, hey presto - rock solid display. Since that point I've been busily video encoding, audio ripping etc without so much as a flicker.
Looking for inspiration now, how on earth do you troubleshoot this ?
Any advice appreciated....
