EDGE i7 bundle - bios profiles

In another thread it was stated
    >>In the BIOS there would be 2 profiles setup ; 1 for standard stock settings and the other for the overclocked settings. To switch between the 2 you simple load the profile you need in the BIOS and reboot.<<

I was wondering if it would be possible to have three profiles, one for stock speed, one for the extreme 4.0ghz overclock, and another for a modest overclock - say 3.6ghz.

My new computer will have a variety of uses, ranging from AVCHD video editing, through Cubase/Kontakt based music arranging, to general admin and office work, and only the AVCHD really needs extreme overclocking. Cubase can probably use a modest overclock, and office work is no challenge to an i7 at stock speed.

    What do you think ?

ps. I've come to this forum after reading some of the contributions from Pete Kaine over on the SOS forum. I must say the 3XS systems appear to be exactly what I'm looking for.

Re: EDGE i7 bundle - bios profiles

    Hi Joe,

I dropped you a PM over on SoS but you may have missed it.

I'll copy and paste what I put so you don't have to check it:
    -----------------------------------------------
I set up some of these and asked the web team to get them online but it appears they haven't been able to go live with them yet due to some management red tape.

Anyhow if your interested then we can do the Edge 4.0Ghz bundle for you on this page http://www.scan.co.uk/shops/3XS/bund..._icmp=yH5WRg6u

The only change that needs making is the fan isn't suitable.

If you call our sales guys and order the bundle ask them to substitue the Apache fan for a Sharkoon S.E. (Product Code LN26609) and that you want it at 3.6 (I think the optimum is 3.55 but I need to check that by doing one) and that they should put in the notes for Pete G to work on it.

That way I can do the bundle for you and ensure it's optimized for audio use.
    ----------------------------------------

All that pretty much stands, but that i suggested fan won't let you do 4Ghz if you still want to hit that to help with the video encoding.

To that end the apache is the best bet and you could just grab the edge bundle as it stands and use it. If you order it and have someone add to the notes to have it passed to me to configure then I'll set you up the 3 profiles and make sure they work for you.

Perfect. I think I'm going to go for the "3 profiles (2.8ghz, 3.55ghz, 4.0 ghz) Edge 4.0 bundle option" with Apache fan. That gives me maximum flexibility, with penalty (as I understand it) of a small amount of extra noise using that cooling. It'll be situated in a room away from my recording area anyway, so noise is not super-critical. I presume the cooling/fan would be quieter anyway when the processor is not being extremely overclocked ?

I'll take a look at the cases and power supplies you're offering as well.

I'm off to Greece in a week or so - back on the 20th September, so I'll call your sales guys and place the order immediately I get back. Unless it's currently taking three weeks to fulfil orders ? - in which case I'll phone BEFORE I go on holiday !

    Best Regards

Re: EDGE i7 bundle - bios profiles

Well, I was going to salvage a lot of stuff out of my Core2Duo system to contribute to the new system, but I'm now changing my mind, and I think I'll buy it all new and keep the old Core2Duo system intact as an extra resource.

I'm now thinking in terms of :-
    650W Corsair power supply
    Coolermaster CM-690 case
    2 x 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black 6gb/sec
    LG GH22HS50 DVD and software
Windows 7/64 bit Home Premium OEM

This stuff, plus the Edge 4.0 bundle comes to about £1000, which seems reasonable for such a high-spec result. I built my Core2Duo system from parts, so I'm no stranger to self-assembly.

Just putting all this extra info in this thread as an aide-memoire really, though if any of the above choices are ill-advised I hope someone will chime in.

I missed out the graphics card. I don't play games, so I just require a good HD video implementation.
I've chosen Asus HD 4350 1024MB DDR2 DVI VGA HDMI Out PCI-E Low Profile Graphics Card, which is passive cooling and a meagre 20W consumption. Seems to be a bargain for under £40.

The Fan on the cpu will be voltage controlled from the bios so in theory is should be slower. As the temptures don't go silly until the 4Ghz overclock it should certainly be quieter at stock.

The bundles are done seprately from systems and normally it's a couple of days to turn them around. Even if we have to test 3 different overclocks you should still be 3 or 4 days maximum all being well.

That's pretty much what I would go for at the moment except for the psu as the's a few brands out there that are a little bit quieter. They also cost a sizable chunk more and as your keeping your computer well away from your recording area then the list above is pretty good all round bang for buck.

As for gfx, yeah pretty much anything out there will do the job just for audio uses. The passive you've picked seems as capable as any other so all good.

    Pete.

Re: EDGE i7 bundle - bios profiles

Thanks Pete. I've changed my mind on the gfx, as I will also do some HD video editing. A couple of years ago people were swearing by the Nvidia 8800 for HD. A reasonable spec nowadays seems to be the GeForce GTS 250 Green 1 gb. It's a got a 256-bit memory interface, and power consumption slightly higher than the ASUS. It has an integral 80mm fan which will add to the noise of course. I can't seem to find a passive gfx that will guarantee smooth HD playback.
This might mean upping the power supply to 700W.

    How about a 240 rather than a 250?

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-A...-DL-DVI-I-HDMI

And your 650 will be more than enough unless you decide to go highend with the card. 250 and below is still very much low to mid range as far as power requirements go.

Re: EDGE i7 bundle - bios profiles

Thanks Pete. I sent in the order via the internet (Invoice Number: E1506858) yesterday, plus a Service Centre request that it be passed to you for config. Hope that everything is OK.

Just to remind you, it's a standard EDGE, but with three profiles. One - (2.8mhz) for office work, Two - (3.55mhz) for Cubase/Kontakt music work, and Three - (4.0mhz) for HD video encoding.

    Best Regards
