Olly came today and replaced the USB ports at the front of the case. All seemed ok.
This afternoon, I tested it out properly - the same error comes up again - after a while, when copying lots of files - it stops and cuts out communication to the drive - then tries to rediscover the drive. Still just an issue with the front ports (although it does happen less). The back ports are fine.
However I have narrowed it down!!
It is USB2 or 3 portable drives (powered by USB) that the front ports don't like.
A USB external drive powered by a mains plug is fine....
Interesting - a design flaw perhaps in the Corsair case?
I have emailed Ben to indicate the above.
I suspect you will have already checked this, but just in case - if you look at your USB hubs in Device Manager, under the Power Management tab, are any set to allow the computer to switch them off to save power? I had a similar problem, and it seemed to be the USB port would lose connection on a long operation such as copying large files. Clearing this power setting sorted it for me. Doubt it will be this but just in case, I thought I would mention it.
Hmmmmm one of the USB root hubs has the power saving box ticked. I will untick it and see what happens.
Thanks Moonglum,
Nope didn't make a difference Just got the error again
The only other thing I can suggest is check the 'Power' tab and ensure the power available for the port is what you would expect (typically 500mA I think).
They are listed as 500mA.
If you have the USB device connected, what does it list its power consumption as?
I plugged a usb device in.... but cant see which hub it is connected to. Been through all of them - none show the device connected.
The only thing that shows up as using power in any of the hubs is the USB mouse...
I assume then that the 500R case is to be avoided? Putting an order in very soon and that had been the case i was looking at.
I am wondering if its the USB connector on the motherboard thats the problem. The only way I could suggest testing that is to swap the connectors around, so the motherboard USB connector that you are having issues with is then connected to a port on the case that has worked normally. If the port that has worked normally the exhibits the issue, that would point to a motherboard issue to me.
Hope thats clear!
I am not sure how this would affect the warranty though, so maybe best to check first.
Scan have always been pretty lenient with me as regards to moving stuff around in my machine. On the odd occasion I have had an issue they've had me inside my machine changing bits round.
They seemed to indicate that they were happy for me to pretty much do whatever I wanted but if I broke anything myself the warranty wouldn't cover it. I guess they can tell if something has been broken through misuse as opposed to faulty. Probably is worth checking though before you do anything but I'm pretty certain you'll be ok.
Only thing they found difficult was troubleshooting if you flash the bios on anything. They have settings they have tried and tested on specific bios's they are happy with. Changing to a new one can make troubleshooting a bit more difficult their end. I've generally been advised to keep the motherboard bios the same unless I am encountering stability issues and a newer bios is released which should improve matters. Luckily I haven't had to do it so far.
My machine is now quite heavily cable managed though which would make swapping things over a bit of a pain as I know I'll never get it back as tidy as they have managed it!
Hope you get it sorted Cactus anyway
