    Hard drive problems - RMA?

As you see in the order, I recently took delivery of 5 2TB Seagate ST32000542AS Barracuda, for use in the Thecus N5500 NAS of the same order.

Having built the RAID array, it promptly degraded, with one of the drives marked as "Warning". The cause of this turned out to be a "Current Pending Sector Count" of 97. The other four all have 0. Thecus advise that if the count is over 32, the drive should be replaced, and the NAS won't use the drive in a RAID array with such a high error count.

I assume the way forward here is to RMA the drive and get a replacement?

Test the drive directly connected via its own sata to mobo connector with seatools, it will issue a fault/warranty code if it finds an error and this will facilitate RMA handling either directly to scan or to seagate, your choice.

I am sure it will be insanely busy there as its December, more so with order backlogs from weather problems.

Seatools test the drive and raise an OLQ should get you sorted quickly.

I'll try the OLQ, but do not have the ability to test the drive directly with my motherboard right now. Given that I bought all 5 drives for the NAS, and it has rejected one of them, I am pretty sure it's faulty; I tried swapping drives around between trays, and the reported errors stayed with the suspect drive.

Re: Hard drive problems - RMA?

Moments after my postings, Scan replies! My faith is restored

I had posted here rather than gone straight for RMA in case Scan had any advice on how things could be resolved without, but I'm happy to RMA if that seems like the best option. I shall arrange for a collection early next week, thanks!

Re: Hard drive problems - RMA?

    Hi Kata,

I've recently bought a batch of 13 of the very same drives. Out of those 13 I've had 6 with IO errors (current pending sector) issues. I am also using these with Thecus SANs (n8800sas and a n7700plus). These drives keep going faulty but I've tested each one with SeaTools and I'm getting no error codes, so I can't RMA them.

I've got two open cases with Thecus but no one seems to have any idea what the case of the issue is. I am currently conducting a punishment test on my last two failed drives. I have cleaned the disks with diskpart, then created and show formatted an NTFS partition. I've then use Bart's Stuff test 5.1.4 to carry out write tests to both drives, so far its written about 3TB and read 1.5 TB to each drive. My test desktop is a bit ropey and it rebooted for some reason. I am going to run a full SeaTools long test on each drive and see what I get. If there are no error codes, which I suspect there won't be, then it may be a compatibility problem. My first long scan should be complete in a few hours’ time, the other will have to run over night.

Everyone seems to be scratching their heads over this one. Anyone have any theories on this?

    Thanks,
