    7850 HD problem

    Hi guys,

I've started two threads already, but they were asking for help, and I'd like to elevate this to an RMA now please.

The first thread was a general "Thanks for processing my order quickly", which was here http://forums.hexus.net/scan-care-he...her-order.html
The second thread was in teh GPU section of the site, asking for help. It's here http://forums.hexus.net/graphics-car...u-problem.html

I called your customer services line today, and spoke to a helpful chap who said he'd mark my record accordingly. I discussed the problem of this card crashing with him. I confirmed I was running the latest drivers from the AMD website. He suggested that I try the beta drivers.

I came home and installed the beta drivers. I rebooted. I subjected the PC to 2 hours of 3Dmark 11 and FurMark.

It didn't even break a sweat. It did 30 minutes of Furmark at 1600x900 without going above 56 degrees C, while I was running two monitors: The tests were on my 1080 monitor, the CCC was on my secondary so I could keep an eye on temps, fan speed, etc. I altered the clock speed in CCC to DOWNstep the processor and memory on the Graphics Card in case it was struggling, and still got a score in the 5000's on 3dMark at 720p. So far as I was concerned, it flew through the tests.

I then left the system idling while I had dinner. Came back, did some browsing, and tried Far Cry 3 again. I deactivated the secondary monitor with windows+p and proceeded to play on the main monitor.

I got 10 minutes of gameplay before it crashed. It was a slow point in the game: I'd killed two pirates and a couple of komodo dragons, and was just walking around. Bamf. The screen went black, exactly like when I had the non-beta drivers.

Thus, I don't think anything has changed.

Your man asked if I had tried Battlefront or COD or similar. I don't have that game. The problem has manifested in Dead Island, Far Cry 3, Crysis Warhead and Arkham City now.

The card is stable under non-gaming computer use, but apparently doesn't like games.

This is my first AMD card, and I'm not impressed (though, obviously, I appreciate that you guys don't make them ).

I should like to return the card, please. I still need a GPU, but would like to move back to Nvidia. I believe that the 600gt is comparable to the 7850. I was looking at this one
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-p...60-dp-dvi-hdmi

It's more expensive, so I'd have to pay the difference, obviously.

Could you let me know how to proceed, please?

    Thanks

    Rob

    Re: 7850 HD problem

Sorry, Cat, I don't understand your first sentence. Do you mean "how do you know you haven't just got a faulty card"? If so, I very much suspect that I have, though I'm puzzled how it can survive Furmark and 3dmark, but not games. I'm not saying it's ALL AMD cards, clearly that would be moronic, but it's not exactly disposed me favourably to them when the first one I try gives me problems I've not had before.

The same system build was rock solid when it had my Nvidia 8800gt in it.

I've not tried it in another system: my other system is a low profile HTPC which is fairly low spec, doesn't have Steam or any other games installed, and offhand I'm not sure the PSU would take it. If someone from Scan comes back and recommends it, then fine, I'll see what I can do, but it wasn't discussed on the phone this morning, and following a full windows Reinstall, attempts with two drivers, playing the games several times to see if it goes wrong (which it does) and testing with 3dmark, etc, I think I've demonstrated that it's rather more than "Meh, want to send this back please"

    1. This one: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-g...75mhz-hdmi-mdp (Gigabyte)

    2. Yes, it's pre-overclocked, but as I said in a post above, I configured it in CCC such that when the load gets high, the clock speed REDUCES, being limited to 900mhz on the processor and 1150 on the memory (which I know appears low seeing as the spec says memory 4800mhz, but the CCC slider only goes up to 1450). There are pictures in one of my above threads, or here http://www.lawboy.co.uk/ebay/2.jpg And, yes, I know the box isn't ticked: it wasn't when I took the screenshot.

    3. My Q8200 (not sure why you've put speech marks around it, it is a real thing) is OCd to 2.73Ghz, and I've got 4bg ram.

    4. Settings not at extreme, no, but they are at high.

    5. As to CPU overheating, http://www.lawboy.co.uk/ebay/1.jpg when running Furmark. Didn't get a screengrab when running games, but the CPU wasn't signif hotter that I noticed, no. I have a Ninja Scythe Rev B on it.
