as bad as the original post was (scan's actions being no more "disgracefull" or like "leeches" than any other retailer in the country) at the root of it seems a misguided customer just requesting a lower price for a product. you presumably get this everyday, i mean, we are english, it's our duty to complain

DarkAngel, if you want a cheap wii, pricerunner.co.uk show johnlewis.com as having the best price in the country (£211 with game) though they're out of stock like the rest of the world. you may have better luck at play.com, prices starting at £253.

Scan deserve more credit than they get currently due to their prices which are quite frankly, insanely good as retailers go.

they may get it everyday but not in this fashion.

i dont find scans response harsh. the comment is unjustified as they haven't really done nothing wrong. there's nothing to be disgusted about. okay so maybe suggesting they are unintelligent might be offensive to some but I see it as they expect some common sense from them.

I find it funny how the OP has started this thread and then not replied.

My parents were going to buy a Wii from SCAN but due to stock issues they decided against it, luckily my step dad managed to get the last one in stock from Virgin (Zavvi) and he had to pay a little extra as well for the reasons mentioned.

Unfortunately what you decide to take as "suggestion" would be beyond my control, what I have written is quite clear, provides valid reasons why the price has increased and I will admit to the point but why shouldn’t it be?.

We need to make clear not only to the poster but also to the other users of the forum to ensure SCAN is not portrayed in the wrong light and the original poster has clearly tried to do without knowing all the facts.

We provide this forum to help customer and gain feedback good or bad, we take positive feedback with modesty and negative feedback on the chin but we are not here to be flamed either.

I apologies if you have taken my post to be harsh, I certainly don't believe it to be...

    Best Regards

    Re: Totally Disgusted

Just to cap off this thread... if you want a practical demonstration of supply and demand affecting prices, just go and try and buy a Wii at RRP.

It's all well and good posting links to other retailers but what's the point if they're out of stock.

    Here's an example:
I'm selling Bugatti Veyrons for £250, any colour and trim choice you like. Includes a naked, lustful pr0n star of your choice and free fuel, tyres, servicing for life along with twice yearly three month Caribbean holidays for you and 5 mates.

Please note: This product is currently out of stock.
Does it still rate as the bargain of the century?

The point is, the price makes little difference if there's no actual stock to buy.

But a big difference when not the actual RRP of a Bugatti Veyron lol

Like people have said, Scan are not the type of company to try and rip customers off. They're obviously having to pay over the odds to get stock in for Christmas, and if you want one for Christmas then that is the price you're going to have to pay! People should only have reason to feel agrieved if they have actually bought one at that price and even then they have no reason to complain, no one is actually forcing you to buy.
And if someone wants to use the good old excuse that "I dont want to let my kids down at Christmas" then they really should learn the powers of the word "no"!! If I ever found out my parents have paid well over the odds for my Christmas present I would have considered them extremely stupid (but would have neen grateful of course! lol)

Doesn't matter what the price is, you can't buy it, it's out of stock, that's the point.

It can sometimes be even more insidious than that. There's an old technique known as "bait and switch". I'm not accusing specific any retailer of this, mainly because I haven't followed Wii pricing by virtue of being entirely uninterested in one, but the technique is ages-old. It works like this ....

    - offer a desirable product at an unrealistically good price (the bait)
    - don't have any in stock
    - when you get people in the shop/on the website, "switch" them onto something else.

Oh, and as for RRP, it should be remembered that it's a "recommended" price only. Not only do manufacturers not determine what products sell for to the public, but resale price maintenance legislation makes it illegal for them to do so. Prices are set by supply and demand, and it's an unfortunate consequence of that that when supply is limited, price is likely to go up. And by the time it goes up at Scan, it'll have gone up for the entire supply chain .... quite possibly starting with the manufacturer. The only people likely to avoid that are large companies with advance contracts and fixed pricing on those contracts. Dell might well be able to avoid market fluctuation on hard drive purchases, for example, by having annual contracts, but smaller operations can't.

It's no different to what plumbers do, for instance, when prices go up at certain times of year because they've got more work than they can do. For that matter, so do my prices as a journalist. Some magazines pay more than others, and if I've got plenty of work from the high payers, I won't take commissions from the lower payers .... unless they're prepared to match the rates, which they usually aren't. My time is in limited supply (unless someone comes up with a way of increasing the number of hours in a day), so unless there's a good reason for taking a low paid job (and sometimes there is), I charge what the market will bear.

    Re: Totally Disgusted

Let us look at an example.

Play is selling Wii (UK) Sports Pack Plus 4 Games..The Golden Compass, Looney Tunes ACME Arsenal, The Bigs and Mario Party 8. Retail Price for all that is £319.99 and Play is selling for £299.99..£10 more than Scan but with 4 games and its UK.

Now that Scans motives have been blown out the water and they have indeed been exposed as trying nothing more than to cash in on parents wishes to make their kids dreams come true this xmas will they now drop the price for their Sports Pack to £179.99 the true UK Retail price?

I will not hold my breath for that to happen.

Have a merry xmas Scan safe in the thought that many kids wont.

I'm from Yorkshire you shouldn't waste so much money on a kids present, dig a hole in your back garden and let them play with that.

Would you expect scan to sell the wii at £179.99 if they had payed more than that in the first place? The choice is still simple if you think the wii is worth £280 and you want one buy it, if you think it worth £180 hang on.
