LED or LCD 24 inch monitor

    Greetings all,

after 11 years of use my old IIYAMA CRT finally gave up today so need a replacement 24 inch monitor. Can someone say what the difference is between LED and LCD monitors. I do a lot of graphic work including video editing so clear and fast displays are important. Note i have tended to use IIYAMA in past as they seam to make good quality products but am open to suggestions.

Re: LED or LCD 24 inch monitor

The main difference between LED and LCD monitors is related to their backlighting techniques. The newer LED series use LED's to illuminate the panels and as such tend to be even more environmentally friendly as they use less power than the standard LCD series of displays.

As such, your really better off taking into consideration other aspects of the display such as viewing angles, colour gamut range and what type of panel is used because for better colour reproduction the IPS panel based displays have been very popular for this type of task, but these are a bit more expensive than the conventional TN panels which are more widely used.

    I hope this information helps.

    Best Regards,

Re: LED or LCD 24 inch monitor

Benq has just brought out a range of monitors with the VA panel display system, better than TN panels for picture quality, but not so good as IPS. But they're as cheap as TN, so strike me as a bargain at the mo.

Scan don't sell them at the moment - The VW2420 doesn't have speakers, the other two do, but you can ignore them.

Re: LED or LCD 24 inch monitor

Real LED monitors (OLED is the most promising technology) are incredibly expensive still. What is generally advertised as an "LED Monitor" is really, as Lee says, simply an LCD monitor using LED backlighting. Other things being equal, they usually offer better blacks, and better contrast ratios than LCDs with conventional backlighting.

My opinion is that the price premium is probably justified by the improvement, esp if you are a professional who works all day with the monitor. Either way, a 24" monitor is almost certainly a tiny investment compared to what you would have paid for your CRT if it's 20" or bigger.
