In here a sec guys !

In Feb of this year i purchess a wd : se 250gb hdd from your goodselfs.

Few days again it started to deveope bad sectors on the hdd and so i ran wd data life gard tools on it to see what the fault is it came up with a smart erorr and said that i need to replace it.

I then contacted wd over a advance rma for the hdd, it kept coming up with invalid serinal number so i then email them and this is the response i get

Please check the serial number as it may be incorrect. Otherwise the drive is a stolen drive. It was stolen from the factory and not under warranty. We cannot offer warranty on stolen product.

The retailer is required to replace. Interpol are aware of the theft.
Now what am i to do ?

regards the sn i got it right every time.

Just for thoese that thought i got the sn wrong (taken 10-01-05)

thing is m8 i need you to send us the drive first so i can get the data off it.

Now if wd had accepted the sn i could have done a advance rma but am guesiing that you would want me to send the hdd in first which i carn't do cos i need to get the data off it and only another 250 is big enuff to fit what i have on it.

If the serial number is WMAEH2116816 (8's look like 3's alot) then it was not stolen (but was sold by WD in the USA originally) and we could replace it with proof of purchase.

I have seen 3 photos of the label. 2 on the forum and one in the attachment. In all cases I cannot tell if it the last 3 digits of the serial number are 816 or 316. As you have the drive and can see that is clearly 316 then we can do nothing as we can confirm it was stolen.

If there is any chance that the serial number ends with 816 then contact me again. Check for a label on the side of the drive at the back where the serial number is clear. If the serial number is WMAEH2116816 and we have proof of purchase that you bought a drive for your own personal use, and therefore that it was not bought in America and resold in Europe by yourself (and therefore we see you were not buying in bulk for resale in Europe) we can arrange a replacement for Europe.

Please fax to: 00 31 20 446 7607 or e-mail to james.wareham@wdc.com a scanned attachement receipt for the drive with:

    (PROOF OF PURCHASE)
    NAME AND ADDRESS (IN CAPITALS)
    TELEPHONE NUMBER
    E-MAIL ADDRESS
    SERIAL NUMBER
So scan uk sold me a stolen hdd cos after checking the second sn labe, it ends with 316, which tbh is not on.

That looks like an 8 to me not a 3 and why are you blaming Scan? They obviously buy these drives in bulk so they aren't to know.

It might do but theres a 2nd sn lable on the end of the hdd that confirms what the sn of the hdd is and wd have confirmed that the hdd is a stolen one.

And tbh it's no excuse here i am now with absolutely no waranty at all.

I can see scan asking me to send the hdd in and all the mess that will entail and am going to be with out the drive while ever they sort it out there end which is not on, if it had not been stolen wd would have done a advance rma on the hdd for me and some how i don't see scan doing the same, but we shall see when i call them.

Selling stolen drives? tell WD that you brought it from scan, and they should maybe inspect there stock for other stolen drives.. if a drives stolen, its going to be a lot of them, not just one.

I dont think scan will let you have an advance RMA. See my thread near the top, I just dont think its going to happen...

Yes but I would think WD might want there drives back from scan, and maybe they might even decide not to let scan resell there drives in the future..

I dont think things could get much nastyer than that, having WD refuse to let scan sell there drives, that would hurt them a lot more than anything you do as a result of your order.

I can lend you a drive if you're stuck. Scan are not bad guys. Please dont be offended with them. I can tell you are gutted...I would be too.....but its sortable. I'm sure SCAN will be ok to help. If not then PM me and I'll lend you a HDD.

    Western Digital

    Guys,

This drive was a drive from a batch which we (Scan Computers) purchased from a company called REDSTAR MARKETING, See photo - (if i can figure out how to attach one)

We have very recently become aware of this issue and have been assiting Western Digital and law enforcement agencies in this matter, however, REDSTAR our suppliers in this matter have vanished and currently have been un-tracable.

It is impossible for us to distinguish between legitimate drives that were in stock at the time and these stolen units.

We unfortunately have to wait in each case for this to come back to us as it has done now and resolve the problems ourselves.

With this in view i would like to confirm to Apex that you will shortly receive a call from one of our advisors, whom will resolve this issue to your satisfaction. If any of your personal details have changed from those originally given, can you please contact IMMY by selecting the returns department from our main queue system 0870 755 4747, he has been briefed in relation to this and is ready to get a new drive out to you.

    Wesley Aldred
    Operations Manager
