NVidia 7800 GT or 7800 GTX or 7900 GT

Budget is set for two middle range cards.

Problems starts that both the 7800 GT and GTX and 7900 GT all can fit in that price band.

Looking at the specifications I believe the fastest graphical solution would be to go for a 7800 GTX with 256MB and 24 pipes around the 1200 - 1500 MHz range?

Or save some money and go for the best specification 7800GT card ??

And where do I stand on the 7900GT card - spec does not look that better and I have heard rumors of heat problems.

Can anyone advise or give comments???????

By two cards do you mean to run them in SLi?

If so there have been some improvements for SLi in the 7900 series.

The 7900GT with typically 256MB 7900GT CO ,Mem 1500 MHz ,GPU 500 MHz ,24 Pipes @ £265 is as good as 7800GTX with typically GTX 256MB 1200 MHz ,450 MHz, 24 Pipes @ £330

If the 7900 is better than the 7800GTX why is the GTX card always more expensive ???

And when I can save even more money with a 7800GT with typically 256MB Mem Clock 1100 MHz ,GPU 470 MHz ,24 Pipes @ £200 --- How much faster can the other two cards be ???????

got two words bull crap, both makes are equal as far as game compatability is concerned show me some evidence that any game wont run on either brand, if anything if a game wont run its drivers not the card

now ATI's latest gen cards run FEAR alot better due to the more shadow processors,

I have both cards here,ive tested both at a widescreen rez of 1680 x 1050 and time and time again the ATI card is stronger with all the advanced eye candy & lighting effects turned on, sure the nvidia is a strong contender but it does not match the x1900's ability to shine in current latest games such as FEAR

Its close but check reviews out the 1900 pwns ass period

ATi still has superior video quality, and although not-proveable, alot of people say ati card's tend to run more stabily, and the drivers are better

The OP's not considering a 7900GTX and the 7900GT is higher-specced and better-performing than the 7800GTX, so I don't really see your argument.

ATI's cards are superior at the moment. The drivers are good (despite running .NET which I'm not too keen on) for everything apart from overclocking. Having said that I can get 690/800 just using ATI overdrive

Image quality on the ATI cards is better at the moment no doubt about it.

As for the 7800GT/GTX vs 7900GT....I'd get the 7900GT

LOL! Only game in question is Black & White 2, which is work in progress.

X1800XT runs Quake 4 perfectly, the whole 'openGL = Nvidia' is not a question any more. Competes well with 7800GTX, and similarly priced.

Would find X1900XT, they are going for £280 if you look around. Well worth it, better IQ, and more advanced than the 7900.

ATM the X1900 is the best card around now. The 7800 was king for a long time, and the 7900 is just a smaller die version of that, not really much advancement in tech, just a faster core. X1900 however is at least different internally.

i hate ati because of the temps but tend to agreewith you on this one the x1900 probably is a better card
