    Motherboard RMA

I bought a Foxconn NF4K8AC-RS-1.0 from Scan about 3 months ago, but recently the chipset fan has started to play up, sometimes needing to be spun up with my finger, and even then it would pulse and make a horrible noise.

I wrote directly to Foxconn about getting a replacement fan, but they insisted I would have to return the whole board. This was last week, and since then the mobo has had problems booting.

Trouble is I only did an RMA with Scan a week or so ago for a faulty PSU - I kind of feel like I'm taking the mickey to request another RMA again so soon. Really I'm just checking that it's OK to do this, and to be sure I should deal with Scan rather than direct from Foxconn (who weren't particularly helpful to be honest).

Also, is it OK to RMA when I might not have all the packaging/manuals etc. that came with the mobo? I have the box but that's about it...

Well apparently there was no fault found. Can Scan, or anyone else, recommend a replacement chipset fan/heatsink for this motherboard, as it definitely doesn't work properly regardless of what this RMA says.

Also the email I received says I can contact your returns staff for assistance, but doesn't mention a contact address - any help there?

i had a chipset fan that was a little like yours i just took the fan out from the heat sink and cleaned out the very very little bit of dust from under it and hey presto it worked fine, dunno bout yours though but might be worth a try

I've tried something like that, to no avail.

If Scan's technicians can find no fault with it, perhaps a bumpy ride up to Bolton and back has done it some good and loosened/tightened something. Guess i will wait and see.

I knew I shouldn't have RMAed this for a small fault such as this, but it caused me real problems and the heatsink is right underneath the video card, making it virtually impossible to find a suitable replacement.

I don't really understand why Foxconn couldn't mail me a replacement fan either - I offered to pay for the item and shipping, but they just ignored my emails after that.

Sucks if I have to buy a whole new motherboard for this stupid problem.

I've had a similar experience with Scan saying no fault found....in fact I don't know that I've ever seen a fault found with anything I've returned

do you think maybe this would be able to fit?, did a search for a low profile chipset cooler and came up with this

    http://www.vadim.co.uk/Akasa+AK-210+...Chipset+Cooler

or maybe this one that you can place the heatsink away from under the graphics card although after reading a review i noticed the availability is limited to the US.

Thanks jms45, really appreciate you finding some stuff I'd not come across.

The first one, even at 24mm high, might be too high for the mobo. I'll check for sure when I get it back from Scan.

The second one looks like the sort of thing I need, even if it's slightly overkill. I'll look around to see if I can import or get it off eBay. Though to be honest the motherboard was only £50 to start with, though I wouldn't buy this one again. I'm tempted just to tell Scan to keep the mobo and save the delivery cost.

I do really like Scan as a company and I'll keep using them but I don't know how they managed not to find a fault with it - if that fan didn't spin for me with two different power supply I don't really get how it started working for them all of a sudden.

If anyone from Scan is reading can I please get an email to use - I'd like to know if they just found that it booted so passed it without a fault without checking the fan was working properly.

    Skillian,

This item was not NFF you were sent the mail in error, sorry for that it was found to be faulty, they lubricated the fan for you and it is now working fine.

However, just to be safe I have replaced the fan with a brand new one for you.

There is no charge obviously and the board with newly fitted fan will be with you shortly.

    Wesley

Wow, that's great news. Thanks man, it's appreciated.

Never thought of lubricating the fan, I'll remember that in future.

You guys are the best online IT retailer out there - sorry if it sounded like I was moaning at you
