    Re: HP N36L Microserver - £100

    Another Question.

Is it possible to install An OS from a usb stick on the server?

I`ve never actually done this before but I assume it would work in the same way as a disc?

I stuck another gig in mine bringing it up to 2gb, made a big difference under Ubuntu.

I`ve isntalled debian and atm everything seems nice and nippy so will keep the 1gig for now.

Got sabnxbd and sickbeard up and running as well as an lvm over my other drives(got the 250 gig drive in purely as an os drive )

    Re: HP N36L Microserver - £100

Using a GUI is a massive waste of resources on a server, especially since most servers need to be controlled through CLI anyway. Also bad practice in terms of security, but not likely a concern for a LAN only server.

    Re: HP N36L Microserver - £100

Mine is all sorted Got Samba set up last night and can stream stuff to my laptop and the htpc.

There is a bit of a delay. not sure if it was because of my laptop being wireless or the servers 1 gig ram.

also thinking its time to upgrade my network to a gig switch to take full advantage

True, not sure why a GUI should present a security risk but otherwise I'd agree.

In this instance the box is running as an XBMC front end hence a GUI helps.

Ask any security analyst/pen tester and they will tell you the same thing, not just about a GUI but about any unnecessary services running on a server. Even the Windows server installation disc advises you to do a CLI-only install for anywhere security is a concern. A GUI just happens to be a relatively large, commonly installed, piece of software with plenty of room for exploits to exist. One of the first rules for making a server more secure is to remove any unnecessary services - and in most cases a GUI is not necessary or even used.

Right, finally got round to doing something with mine. Thanks to those who helped earlier in the thread.

Just a quick one, while I've got it taken apart on the ironing board (girlfriend going mental that I'm using it as a workbench, pipe down!) - how do I fit anything in the optical disk drive 5.25" bay? I've taken the door and the 'hood' off, do the sides come off? There's some plastic clips which seem to clip onto the metal framework of the case itself, but having snapped one off, I don't think that is the right approach...

I'm trying to fit an IcyBox caddy for my 5th HD to go in... can't see how I get access to screw it in place!

    Ta muchly.

There are some 'special' bolts attached to the front door, these go on your 5.25" bay device which you then slot in the 5.25" bay

DDY, thanks for that. Found these. However, the diagram in the manual (and my experience with fitting 5.25" bays in the past) suggests I need access from the outside of the case in... or am I doing this completely wrong?
