My Barclaycard Student CC seems to cover me for anything (I claimed £9 last time!) I can simply email them and they'll usually have the transaction refunded within 24 hours...

If you buy something with your credit card, then the CC company are tied into the contract of sale as much as the supplier, so any disputes should be sent to them as well as the people selling you the product/service, if you wish to have a refund.

Debit cards arent protected as they're not credit. However you can get things like 'Barclays Additions' or whatever they call it these days. They're normally sold as part of a package offering commission free currency, free annual reviews, debit card fraud cover, etc, or you can go through one of the third party card protection companies who will offer fraud protection on all of your cards for a small annual fee (£15?).

Can't find any info on the website about the price promise. Is it in the bump they send you once you sign up?

The HSBC price promise is for the current account when using your debit card.

Not only that if someone hacks your debit card they can clean your bank account out. Even if your bank eventually gives you the money back think of the grief - no cash to spend , DD's bounced etc. If they hack your CC then all that has happened is the CC bill climbs whilst its being sorted out

One of the best safeguards on DC transactions was an online calculator, which gave a card number & expirey date which was only valid to the value you selected for each transaction. IIRC it was from Cahoot. I'd have to agree with CC all the way though (along with some common sense).

hahaha! i thought that was just me - i know the 16 digit number, expiry and security code on my debit card straight off the top of my head, no bother, worryingly i appear to have unwittingly learnt 2/3 of the number on one of my credit cards too

    ...must....stop....purchasing......

One thing to note well tho - you are not covered for transactions that are deemed to take place outside the uk.

    said who?

you are covered in transactions outside uk, eg u pay for a hotel abroad, they thake the money out twice by mistake, credit card company WILL sort that out, thats just one example, CCA and your card supplier covers you anywhere you use your card. (except intentional fraud ofcourse)

i've not got a credit card - dont trust myself with one. i'm 23 and earn a fair amount, for a respectable credit card company no less .. still.. i've always used my debit card to buy stuff - loaded single orders of up to 2k onto it in the past, nearly all online and never had a problem..

just dont buy from dodgy sources

Bacon, which company is it, you can do some online checks? Also check for the security padlock at the bottom of the webpage?
