    Re: Protein Shakes

ive been using some expensive stuff recently (thought id treat myself) maximuscle prograin... it really does help, especially if you have a poor diet. the thing i like the most about the prograin is that the chocolate does taste nice with water. yes, with cold water. as long as you get the right mix its just like chocolate milkshake!

ive heard that creatine can help a lot too, but ive not really used it before so cant comment.

    I use this a lot:

Optimum Nutrition 100% WHEY PROTEIN 10lb + FREE SHAKER : Protein : sports supplements and bodybuilding products incl Maximuscle - Monster Supplements.com

It has glutamine in as well as some other things and often recognised as the best you can buy. It's not that expensive either.

recognised by who? It is expensive, compared to the equally good (if not better) stuff from myprotein... You can even get pure Whey isolate (90%+ protein) for less than that!

    Re: Protein Shakes

Ok you clearly think I'm trying to sell it or something. I was just suggesting what I use and I have done a lot of research into it. Yes you can buy cheaper protein shakes but this one has lots more in the few percent that aren't protein that help your body process it fast.

    Also try ZMA on top.

I thought I was being helpful as someone mentioned maximuscle (stupidly overpriced) and others are mixing it up with milk! If you are going to take it seriously and actually want to see results then you need to get good stuff and do it right.

No, I don't think you are trying to sell... I would have accused you directly if I did...

What do you mean by this?

This is only 80% whey which means it probably contains very cheap whey concentrate (60-70%) mixed with some good quality (90%) isolate... Therefore, I think its inferior (and more expensive) to the 90% isolate that I buy

I suppose it does have a tiny bit of hydrolyzed whey, but that's not really going to make much of a difference...

To be fair its not really a terrible price if you really do want to buy something branded and flavoured... and it comes with a free shaker too! But I'll stick with what I'm having...

Its much better than maximuscle, I agree with you on that

    Re: Protein Shakes

Just a word of caution on the non-branded stuff. Plenty of posts have mentioned that Whey is Whey and that's mostly true, but just make sure you buy from a recognised retailer. It's not unknown for some supplements actual contents to not match the nutrional info on the side. The bigger the brand, the more they have to lose so the less likely this is to be an issue. I'm not saying anything against generic whey proteins as, like all generics, there are big savings to be had - just saying to be sure of your source.

Personally, I've always used mainly protein only in my gym with occasional bouts of creatine. Creatine is effective imho, but you need to remember what it does - shortens recovery times (significantly) and also can give you a small boost in strengh/stamina. Hence it allows you to train at a higher intensity and more often (for example, you could train biceps the day after doing back). It will not make you any bigger on it's own- you will need to support your extra training with enough protein at the right times to achieve the potential gains it offers.

    Re: Protein Shakes

That's why I still opt for an all-rounder like Cyclone. It's the most effective at lean muscle gain imo & it aids recovery by 50% (again, imo).
Plain whey I think needs to be stacked with creatine & at least L-Carnitine for effective use.

    Sorry, but that's nonsense...

Branded companies are actually worse than good unbranded stuff IMO... Branded companies mix very low quality whey concentrate (60%) with the isolate (90%)... I just buy isolate (90%) from myprotein...
Branded companies mix it with other stuff... You can buy the "other stuff" too but its not essential (I buy creatine, HMB, EAA, Leucine, Green tea extract, Glutamine and probably a couple of more things too)

As merlin says I would be careful where you get it from eg don't get it from a market or ebay, but a place like myprotein is ok - it gets independent labs to check its products and posts results online... They are also ISO9001 accredited

But at the end of the day its up to you if you want to waste your money... cyclone is one of the biggest wastes of money ever

Head over to the muscletalk forums... there are loads of experts over there...

    Re: Protein Shakes

Brands dont usually matter much. Just read the label. I suggest something that says 100% pure Whey protein.

Creatine is an excellent supplement if you want definition. It is also 100% natural supplement and has nothing to do with steroids. Its found in loads of food.

I suggest a protein shake and creatine caps 30 mins before workout to aid you during. Then the same straight after when your muscles are like sponges.

Holland and Barrets are having a half price sale on all supplements at the moment. You can get a tub of whey for about £10. pretty good deal.

    Re: Protein Shakes

Currently I'm using USN whey (clearance from Affordable), and fenugreek & tribilus herbal suppliments. Plus the usual Halibut liver oil, borage seed oil, multivit & glucosamine. (cuz I'm gettin old)

Can't take raw creatine, bloats me something chronic. But i have a good diet with plenty of red meat & game, so plenty of natural creatine.

creatine monohydrate bloats, creatine ethyl ester doesn't, I suggest you try that if you want to use creatine

you don't need the insulin rush to make cee effective too (you do for mono)

    Re: Protein Shakes

I can strongly recommend Body Shapers Fitness as delivery is free and I've always been impressed by their service.

As far as which protein to go for I would always chose PHD Pharma Whey for a straight whey protein or PHD Synergy for an all in one [like cyclone]. Unlike the Maximuscle shakes, the PHD shakes taste great even when just adding water [adding ice cold water makes the taste even better]! I currently take Pharma Whey 2 to 3 times a day.
