    ATI 1900 or nVidia 7900 GT ?

    Hi

I have about £200 to spend and am thinking of upgrading my graphics card (see sig for rig ).

I was looking at the 7900 GT but have recently noticed to the price drops on the ATI 1900, question is, is this a better option for me ?

ok the 7900 GT is around £50 cheaper but I have read the perfomance of the 1900 models is far greater, can anyone help me ?

the x1900xt will demolish a 7900gt, plus you dont have the problem of the nividia sudden death syndrome. if the x1900xt cooler is too loud for you, grab a good aftermarket one.

1900gt is even better value and still bashes the 7900 performance wise.
1900gt also uses less power than the 1900xt (just a little bit).

This may help, check benchmarks against the type of games you play:

go for the X1900Xt, which is £218 from Scan with free shipping. Aftermarket cooler (Artic Cooling Acelero) is £14.

    Much better than 7900GT.

Personally I prefer nvidia, but the X1900XT is a better card, more reliable and will clock to XTX speeds without much drama usually.

Is the noise from the standard cooler really that bad ? on the 1900 xt, this is my currrent way of thinking unless anyone else has any views

It's not that bad at all, no. It spins up to a stupidly loud rate on system start up, but after maybe 10-15 seconds it's down to pretty much your average fan noise. I did replace it with a Zalman VF900-CU as I wanted as quiet as possible with still good cooling (and without water cooling), but the stock cooler certainly isn't as bad as made out. It does spin up while gaming, but generally you'll have the volume up or headphones on anyway - it didn't bother me.

Consider the HIS one, as that has a custom cooler, reckoned to be quieter than the stock one.

I'm no ATi fanboy - I was expecting to get the next nV card as opposed to the ATi - but the RMA rate of the 7900 series is absurd.

The X1800XT might be worth a consideration too - slightly faster than the 1900GT. Can be had for £150 on www.overclockers.co.uk - bought one for myself the other day.

Yeah the cooler is loud, but whenever it needs to spin up it will be drowned out by gunfire or something equally loud emitting from your game. Personally I like my PC quiet when I'm typing or browsing, but twhen I'm playing battlefield 2 with planes flying about artilerry coming through my stereo nothing my PC can do will dorwn out that noise

OK ordered the Sapphire 1900 XT (£218 from good old scan), so once its here I should think about getting a third party cooler, i take it the artic cooling one is the best/cheapest ?

This is my first ATI card, Ive been nvidia for years is the overclocking method the same ? I am looking to get this to XTX speeds ...

I have the arctic cooling cooler on mine as I couldn't stand the stock cooler sound... So try it out first.

x1900gt seems at just over £140 seems to be the current sweet spot.
