    Haggling with Dell?

Ive seen a few posts where people have haggled with Dell on the phone, and I was wondering what kind of deals people had got by calling up and pestering them, rather than just ordering straight of the tinternet. What is the best number to ring for doing this as well?

I need a decent spec laptop soon, so Im keen to hear what you have bagged

If you ring, make sure you get through to Ireland. Dell in India are worse than useless, be it on the sales side or on the support side, the irish win hands down.

I did try, but after all the details I wanted, and repeating them about 3 times (dell in india) you kinda give up. If you get through to ireland the experience is much much different, and quite pleasant (as much as phoning a call centre can be )

I got a good deal on laptop through Dell India, but you definitely need LOADS of patience. Just make sure you spec up the laptop online and print it out before calling, they'll say they've done you a deal by taking stuff off the laptop like BlueTooth and the warranty. I spent 10 minutes trying to convey the difference between an onsite warranty and the insurance they offer.

Just keep saying you're not happy with the price and ring a couple of times if you can be bothered, I had two people fighting over me. Ended up getting about £320 off the web price which was a result.

They'll ask for your credit card details to confirm the order, but you don't have to go ahead with it even if they take your details. When they send the spec you have to reply saying that they can confirm the order, if they don't receive this they can't go ahead with the order(tho don't quote me on that). Say you're not happy with it and what else could they offer to clinch the deal.

This is what I did to get a good discount, treat it like a bit of fun rather than a battle

A friend ordered a couple of Turion laptops yesterday.

We worked out discount from Quidco, rang Dell and asked them to beat the discount. They knocked another £30 off

That was a result and a half getting £320 off the price.

With regards the other point - I believe it's correct as well. When I ordered I was asked to reply and accept the quote.

The laptop was ~£1500 but because I had two people fighting for the business they seemed to out do each other at each step, in the end I paid £1190 for it I think. Even after I'd confirmed the order I had some guy ringing me up offering me more money off if I'd cancel the existing order. Apparently this is against Dells policy and I needed it for a trade show, but it was pretty funny none the less.

If you want a good discount you definitely have to work for it, speak to a couple of people and just keep hassling them for more features for free by playing them against each other. Got a free upgrade to a 120Gb HDD, free upgrade to 2Gb RAM(from 1Gb), free fingerprint scanner and some money off when I ran out of things to ask for

My motto was "You don't ask you don't get".

Heh, I made use of all of the available web offers (upgraded screen less than usual, free XP discs (though they cocked that one up) free double memory, free delivery, probably worked out at about 200-250 of extra stuff (2gb of memory was 150-160 on its own, delivery 70 etc)

This guy spends a lot of time putting together the best offers he can find:

    http://www.dmxdimension.com/

And if you to a google you can find 3-5% discount offers over and above these prices for several sectors: big bluechips (ford etc), health service, local goverment etc.

    See http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/

    Best of luck

I bought a Dell laptop (Inspiron 9400) about a month ago. I called them up and told them I'd been planning to buy when certain special offers were on (free delivery, double RAM, upgrade on the harddrive) but by the time I got to the website the offers had expired. Haggled for a while and got about £200 off the price (despite upgrading the HD to a 60Gb 7200RPM model not listed on the website). Called back a couple of days later telling them I was going to Singapore and it was much cheaper there (I actually was, but they didn't know that) and they knocked another £70 off....

    Fairly pleased.

Just specced up two laptops and got through to the call centre in India. One was a 6400 inspiron with a few extras and it came to 715 quid and the best that they could offer was £690, and there was a 9400 with a better screen, but with lower overall specs and that was £950 and they wouldnt go lower than £898.

I also asked if they could do me a 1gb stick instead of 2x512 and that would have cost an extra 45 quid and then they started on about dell being the only company in the world to offer any kind of warranty on laptop screens. hmm ok.

Not very impressive really. I think Ill wait and see what crops up in the January sales.

    Smile Re: Haggling with Dell?

It is well worth the haggle. I talked my way to a £460 desktop for £330. And I didn't have to try too hard either.

    Re: Haggling with Dell?

Remember guys, that when you receive your machine or order from Dell, call them back up and say you no longer want it and want a refund.
Say it's because you found a cheaper alternative or something.

They will generally give you a £25-£50 refund to save them couriering it back.

Think i found that trick from here. It worked on a pc i bought once.
