well lets wait and see what a decent water cooled card comes up with as it should knock the all in 1 for 6
This is a good idea - I'm looking for a tri/quad-480 workstation soon. Suggest a cheap chassis this is suitable for?
Also, you're using DDR3-1066 with a i7 965? I know all your old benches are done on that setup, but you can't even buy gaming grade 1066 any more.
way too pricey, you can get an EK 480 block, a 360mm rad + fans and the rest of the stuff you need for less than the cooler + interposer plate and it would perform way better.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
he worded it very bad then as it does say a cheap chassis
Cheap is relative. In this case, as it's a WORKSTATION and not a gaming PC, temps+quiet is preferential, given the GPUs are going to be hit hard, 24/7. Obsidian 800D in this context is cheap, given I have a research grant. As it's going to be sitting in a corner of my office for a few years, I don't want the hassle of a full WC setup. So a chassis that's small enough for the water cables to reach enough 12cm fan holes, +1 more for a Corsair H50 hole.
So apart from the 800D, given I don't want a side window, any others?
I think any large full tower would be able to fit 3 or 4, if your going for dirt cheap maybe something be xclio? Or why bother with a case at all? Also if you were gonna get 3 watercooling kits that 450 quid, and for that you could easily watercool your entire pc to extreme levels.
But you'd be looking at an entirely new waterblock when you changed the GTX480, whereas with this you'd just get a new interposer plate, which should theoretically be cheaper.
Plus, it's designed for people who wouldn't consider building their own water loop for fear of leaks / messing it up etc. It's not aimed to compete with separates watercooling - it's aimed to compete with top end air coolers.
And it actually makes the GTX480 make some sense! Cool, quiet, lots of OC headroom... wow!
I can see a lot of people who like the idea of water cooling but don't have the confidence to build their own loop going for one of these and a CPU all-in-one solution on the basis that - as long as new CPU brackets and interposer plates are made - they can keep their watercooling system as they change their PC... Sure, it won't be for everyone (I'd rather build my own loop, tbh) but there's definitely a market for this and it's a well executed product...
Hi Guys - this is Barry w/ CoolIT.
Hope you enjoyed the sneak peak! I'll be trolling around should anyone have any more specific quetsions for us.
Cheers!
Who cares if it has a side window or not, it's a workstation. Noisy can often be solved with long cables/remote access.
I would question selecting the GTX480 option until it's proven itself. It's such a hot and power hungry card I do wonder how much margin (if any) it has for longevity. Hope you've got a good warranty.
20 degrees off a load gtx 480...thats a good enough reason for me to buy one or these
thing is my danger den block puts me at 50 degrees with a 200mhz overclock against a 90 degree card running at stock
