Might make a difference at very high resolutions but I'd say it's probably just an e-peen thing. If this card is smaller, combined with lower power draw/noise it might be a good buy though, if the price is right.

Undoubtedly it's just a bigger number for the less tech savvy to sell more units

Having said that I regularly run out of vram when using CUDA, but that's surely too small a minority to worry about.

    useful for gpgpu cuda/opencl etc

high resolution/texture quality + vsync etc.

Depends if thee is enough bandwidth to utilise it though.

Probably more of a future proofing thing really

    Indeed.

Yeah, at least that problem can be rectified by memory management. And nV should make compute-specific cards easier to get a hold of for hardcore CUDA users.

you need that sort of memory for high res gaming, especially if you want to bump up AA - 2 of these in SLI are enormously more powerful and, more importantly, cheaper than the single card alternative

    Semi-useful, as above.

Which wouldn't even use half that on 2560x1600.

    Or any kind of application.

Future proofing in the IT industry is now a complete fantasy.

There is a market for this in gaming, albeit an extremely small one for high VRAM cards, namely multi-monitor gaming. It's discussed here at resolutions of 4800x2560.

There's also a GTX 560 Ti card with 2GB instead of 1GB. I'm not sure any of these cards yield better performance over their standard counterparts but at least they provide bragging rights for those who buy them.
