HTC Legend or Desire or something else?

Well my contract is up in just over a month, so I have been looking at a new phone, decided I don't want an iPhone (got an iPod touch for those apps) and not too keen on WM6.5 even with WP7 round the corner, so I'm looking at Android phones

Ideally I'd like one with a slide out keyboard (may be ok with a touch keyboard, need to try one in person to be sure) which leaves me with the Motorola Milestone.... but I can't find a retailer selling it on contract.

So the shortlist is currently 2 phones

HTC Desire: Better all round phone, but harder to get on a cheap contract due to the power and popularity of the device, can get on a contract for ~ £35 a month on a 18 month contract but have to pay £60 for the phone on top

HTC Legend: Less powerful device, apparently no Froyo update soon (it's on 2.1 though) BUT I can get it on a reasonably priced 12 month (yeah 12!!!) contract for ~£30 a month pre cashback and no cost for the phone

Anyone got any other suggestions? I know the Motorola Shadow is due soonish (Q2 2010 apparently) but given the lack of stockists for the Milestone/Droid I'm not holding much hope in getting one easily (and the HTC Sense looks really good, currently using SPB Mobile shell so used to widgets etc)

HTC Wildfire is out soon, it'll sit between Hero and Legend. It has been marketed as an entry level Android phone.

Personally, I LOVE my Desire. Well worth it.

I know, contract ends in the beginning of July and I couldn't justify running 2 contracts concurrently

    Legend one I saw was:

300 minutes, 3000 texts, unlimited internet (FUP) for £40 a month on Vodafone via dialaphone with 6 months half price rental (so £30 a month overall) and £35 quidco cashback
Didn't have issues with them before but the Desire looks a better handset TBH

Yeh the P4U one was gone (total cost £325) when I went to order! Luckily the same deal was still on dial a phone (owned by p4u) so I ordered it from there and the offer was removed the following day. It's due to be delivered next week, so they can still cancel on me, but my fingers are crossed!

I would just keep an eye out for the next cheap desire contract.

Re: HTC Legend or Desire or something else?

What about the Nexus One?? You can get it on the same deal as the Desire (£35/month £60 for fone, 18 month contract).

Advantages over the Desire??? Froyo already being rolled out for it. Much easier to gain root access. More custom roms available. Easier to load custom roms to the device.

Re: HTC Legend or Desire or something else?

If your contract is running out, I'd say hold out and try to deal with your carrier.

What do you need out of your contract?

Case in point: Mine's £20 a month, unlimited texts, 500mb data and 100 minutes. I only really call my girlfriend and she's a Magic Number so that's free. I use about 30-40 plan minutes a month and send a few hundred texts. As it goes it's a great deal for me and the phone cost £150 which was a bit steep but not excessive (that's new customer price). I could probably have got them down if I'd waited till august for the end of my contract but I'm glad i didn't!

The Nexus One having faster updates is a bonus, but I love the Sense UI and HTC are likely to keep the updates coming. Is there any way to get Froyo running on a Desire anyway? Surely it's essentially the same hardware as a Nexus One?

But that's the great thing about teh Nexus you can have a Desire rom running Sense UI on it much easier than you can have a Desire running plain Froyo. While it's esentially the same hardware HTC has played with the Desire to change where things are stored and partitioned the memory differently which means things are more difficult to port over to it. The Desire probably wont get Froyo till much later this year.

iPhone 4G should be released soon, I suggest you to wait till July or August. I'm sure rivals will have their own phones to match the new iphone 4G
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 2 GB DDR2, 500GB SATA-II 7200RPM, nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512mb, BenQ E2200 HD, BenQ G2412HD, Logitech S510 Wireless set, Creative GigaWorks T3 Speakers.

You might want to also look at the Palm Pre Plus which has a slide out keyboard and also the BlackBerry Storm2 which has a click screen.

Good idea, I'll do this when I go to get my uni results next week.

Will need to see what the best deal they can do is, I'm unsure how much data I need (my X1 doesn't log but I have 3 email accounts on it syncing every 2-4 hours and twitter as well as using an app store etc)

    Samsung Galaxy S Pro?

Could be bang on what you're looking for, top-end Android handset with a hardware keyboard. Not out yet, but shouldn't be long til release.

That's what it looks like. A lot of the pics that are doing the rounds are just a pre-render done by a website based on what they think it could look like (a lot like the HTC Vision pics).
