Most of the all in one units have a socket so you can plug in an external aerial, this cost around £25. Other problems come from the windscreen on some cars, they dont allow the signal to pass through, so the receiver has to be moved. Even my bluetooth receiver has a aerial socket on it, useful for permanent discreet mounting.

An update on my situation that may help you decide, I updated the TT3 software to 3.07 and all of my bluetooth issues and laggy updates seem to have been cured.

Thats what i would have thought, surely garmin of all people would realise the need for an external aerial. I think i even saw it on their advert.

Hi, I promised that I'd let you know how I got on.

The good news is that I got everything up an running, and it was pretty painless. Tomtom software works great, right out of the box... and I'm pretty impressed by the whole satnav concept. It works every bit as well as the system in my dads Jag, and probably has more uses as tomtom maps stay updated and you can get addons such as speed camera mappings ...etc.

So, I picked up a Toshiba e400 (300Mhz, 256mb SDcard ...etc) off the for sales forums for £120 - I really just wanted a popular model, so that it would be easy to get connectors for it. Bought a windscreen sucker mounting. Picked up a wired GPS mouse for £80 (quite expensive, but I wanted a decent one that was relatively attractive) and specified my PDA (which means the mouse connects to your pda and powers it from the car adaptor):

Plugged everything in, installed tomtom, and woosh, was working right away. Couldn't be easier. Hope that helps any other newbies out there.

Not sure why it's called that, but it's the device that sends GPS readings to your PDA. Maybe it's just the wired ones that are called that.

Yeh as far as I can tell its the wired ones which are called 'gps mouse' because they look similer to a small PC mouse.
