Running linux from USB - extend battery life ?

If I run linux from a USB stick (mainly to browse the internet, download stuff with Azureus and watch videos) will it extend the battery life as the hard drive containing windows can be powered down ?

I assume I will still need Windows when I need to use my built in 3g card, but everything else seems to work fine in Linux.

The laptop is a Dell XPS M1210. I get around 4 to 4 hrs 30min battery life in windows. Thats with the hard drive working all the time.

not really as you never really power down the hard disk it just doesn't spind as much due to lack of access. The USB will still require powering.

Not really worth thinking about in my opinion.

Newer laptop models incorporate power modes which stop providing power to devices that are not in use, so yes, it'd probably extend battery life for a newer laptop.

storing data to flash requires less power than writing and reading from mag-based.

If you can stop the harddisk from spinning up at all, then yes it will potentially increase the battery life, but I'm not aware of a laptop that you can actually disable the powering on of a harddisk (I'm not up to date on hardware) however if you just don't use the hardware but it still spins up - I doubt it would make any difference.
