Vista Load Game check this out - Please check

    When running most games

    e.g.
    Tiger Woods
    Medal of Honour Airbourne
    Overlord
    GRAW2

and maybe others...... it comes up with some weird event log entries

Could you please check the event log and click on Application and see if you have some entries

    Called Desktop Windows Manager

    and it says something like

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process ?????

    and then

The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application

    Thanks

DWM controls the Aero effects I beleive, I guess when you run a full screen app it may be disabled because there aren't any elements for it to 'decorate' with its effects.

Ah righto - I misunderstood, sorry!

    I can't, as I don't run Vista I'm afraid!

I have GRAW2 (hate the controls) and Vista.

I'll have a look when I return home this evening.

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (BF2.exe)

The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application

    That's what mine says...

and have you got any other games which it does this or some which dont?

Re: Vista Load Game check this out - Please check

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter® 2)
    GRAW2

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (CoD2MP_s.exe)
    CoD2 Multiplayer

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (CoD2SP_s.exe)
    CoD2 Single Player

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (Dflwdem.exe)
    Delta Force Land Warrior Demo

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (BF2.exe)
Could be any of BF2, PR or BF2 SF

The resulting effect on the machine is usually a blank/black desktop background. It obviously means DWM can't rebuild the "effects" that were there before playing a game.

I'm using 32bit Vista Home Premium.

Re: Vista Load Game check this out - Please check

    Why do you care?

As Aero stores all its textures in the graphics memory, Vista releases that memory so that it can be used in games (and other high-demand 3D applications).

The second mention from Event Viewer ("DWM was unable to start...") is just because Aero is routinely checking that the process using that graphics memory is still active and working (and as such, Aero will remain disabled, or your game would suffer big time).

You've been told on at least 2 different forums now what this is and why. What was wrong? You didn't get the replies you wanted from the first forum, so you came here instead? That's rather insulting...

Re: Vista Load Game check this out - Please check

i wouldnt find it insulting - i just wanted to canvas the question to a wider audience as possible. I knew why it was doing it - just wondering what games did it and why certain games didnt - thats why I asked for a list of games which did...

mycarsavw answered the question nearly spot on.............

I am knew to vista and have a new build I just want to open the discussion - thanks for your reply anyway....

Thanks, I hadn't patched GRAW (only just installed it) I'll do that now.

It's a non-issue to me, it just takes a desktop refresh to sort it out. <shrug>
