    Text Editing

Whats hot as far as text editing is concerned?

(purely windows based, I don't want no Vi or Emacs here!)

Notepad+ is about 10 years old, so there must be something more recent that is da bomb*

*the kids say this don't they? i like to keep up with da lingo

If it is maxing out your CPU then you have problems.

If your CPU is reaching 95DegC without throttling back or kicking in exctra cooling, then you have even bigger problems.

Yes - vi is a bit quirky - are you using Vi or Vim? What I do like about it is the fact that it recognises the types of files you are editing and the reasonably intelligent application of colour - a boon when editing html or php files, but pretty useful when editing config files.

Vi itself is almost akin to a Wordprocessor - and has the problem that all the original command line Wordprocessors had - how to embed a feature rich command set in a keyboard environment. WordPerfect 5.1 had an incredibly complicated set of keystrokes (and keyboard templates to help map them) and befor that, Wordstar was equally obscure! But Vi/vim is very feature rich. For the few occasions when I need a Gui based text editor I use Gedit.

However none of this is of much use to Funkstar, and apart from Giraffes suggestion, it appears to be Notepad - which probably covers 99% of most users needs. The fact that it may be ten or more years old does mean it is any less capable of doing the job for which it was designed.

    Vi Peter
To be fair to it, once you have the commands stored in your head its very quick to use. Some of them can be very daunting for the newcomer though (like myself)
It took me half an hour to figure out how to write and close a file

I blame Xebian (Debian for the Xbox) which has forced me down this route for my masters degree

Yes it is - I found the built in tutorial very useful, but I only do pretty simple editing with it.

Pity you don't have Vim (Vi improved) some distros include it but alias the Vi command to Vim - others you have to explicitly enter Vim on the command line.

O'Reilly publish a couple of good books on the Vi editor which may or may not be of interest to you

    Amazon.co.uk: vi

I have the pocket reference which is OK.
