AVG free edition is great for home computers. As a gamer, I didnt really want to have anything extra in the background, but it really does take up nothing, resources wise. Updates have been slow, but search around in this forum and theres a workaround.

Touch wood, it seems to be doing its job well

Ever since I've been on broadband at home, I've used Panda. To my knowledge, I haven't had a single virus in 6 months, and I do occasionally run other anti-virus programs and the Stinger Avert tool from Network Associates at least once a week, to check for the 'big ones'.

Also, if you leave your pc on all day, you will notice Panda updating its virus definitions at least 2 or 3 times a day... I haven't heard of this from any other package. Very good for peace of mind. Also, in the last week or two, I have noticed that I am receiving on average 120 virus defs per day?!

Not sure what that's all about but it gives me the impression that a good job is being done...!

At work we are just putting in a new network and we have bought Symantec Corporate. I'm hoping my network is not going to start to slow down

I've dropped AVG 6 from my desktop box as it was missing things. have been using a Panda Titanium trial, will upgrade to fully paid Panda Platinum when I can afford it, on at least 2 out of my 3 boxes (not sure if i can be bothered on the HTPC).

really pleased with Panda so far, went towards them when they had by a huge mergin the most detailed information on viruses running through IRC at the moment of any distributor.

You don't say? So are all the other applications listed in this thread. But they don't creep into every nook and cranny like Nortons does. If they can do their job efficiently and without hogging more resources than they need to, why can't Nortons?

woah.. just in the process of dumping norton for panda, panda has the coolest feature - "scan before install", well impressed, apparently it's found and disinfected *something* already.. just waiting for it to finish scanning the rest of the hdd..

    *wonders what norton missed*

No idea. I dont have any resource probs. Craig's "slowdown" may have something to do with the 13 or so viruses he says SAV didnt pick up but Panda did.

Truthfully I was kinda concerned that Panda found "viruses" that Symantec products did not. Why ?? Well Symantec have an extremely high reputation of "catching 100% of viruses in the wild".

I use the quote cause this is the term, used by the company that gives out this award (I forget the name).

I guess its not all viruses it found but is a bit paranoid ??

When we ran Symantec it wasnt a case of it not catching the files that Paranoid Panda caught, but the fact that Symantec had let Sobig spread around our network without even letting us know! And Sobig is a well-known virus, so we knew it was time for a change. Ohh and moo.dll is found as a hack by several Anti-Virus programs not just panda

Edit: If any of you are considering buying Panda, we usually push the "Platinum AntiVirus" vesion of it if you are carefull with your PC (ie, have Ad-Aware etc, and know not to visit naughty sites) but if your on Dialup we reccomend the Platinum Internet Security at work as it stops dailers also (Altho it is a little bit more of a resource hog!) I personally run Platinum AntiVirus. We only reccomend Titanium if you have a very secure hardware firewall, one minor drawback with Titanium is the lack of scheuling AV scans!

    not neccessarily.

there's been a tide of variants of IRC/SDbot on IRC recently, the variant tracked down to SDBot.SJ

added to Trend Antivirus the day before yesterday, in Panda since January

    looks that way..

4 of the 8 incidents were related to moo.dll (an mirc systeminfo extension) being "a hacking tool", which was complete twaddle, then it found a "suspicous" file (which was in fact an adobe photoshop data file, without which photoshop wouldn't function ), but the last 3 do appear to have been virii..

not sure if they were actually exploits or not given the previous false alarms..
