Az .... thanks for those links, very useful. Be using them on my own sites. Cheers.
I also have to agree with Az on the use of red text in the error reporting capacity, as it's one of the best high contrast colours for pretty much any background, but at any time, AVOID (again, unless it's the most legible text against your chosen background, in which case, shoot yourself in the head, there's no saving you).
I will have to stick to my original point about the date, at least against Az's first point, that it's 'an extra bit of information that is available to the user'. Since when is 'extra' information unrelated in any way to the content of the site a desirable thing? You want to put a text stream from a news website, fine, but at least make the information useful if it's not relevant.
With regards to replacing planes with beaches, you're going to have to watch out for ambiguity. Pictures of planes in that capacity have a specific set of meanings, but beaches could be a lot of things, and too much colour is going to detract from the reason of your site. And what is it supposed to link to? I got NASA, the orient express, the taj mahal, and a few others....que?
Your 'three clicks' concept is admirable, and should be in the page somewhere, but you should have it in the page title, and your meta tags. Once the customer is in the page, the 'three' clicks isn't going to be as relevant as how quickly THEY think they're finding what they need. If your navigation is up to speed, which it seems to be, then you're sorted.
