    NT4 Small Business Server Help

Hi guys, if any of you could help me with this it would save me so much hassle at work! To cut a long story short, my boss decided to give me a job where it was to install a NIC in a NT4 server, and set it up to use a ADSL Router for its internet connection. Im a computer technitian, but ive never actually used NT4 Server before, so what im after is a basic guide on how to install the NIC (its in the pci slot), install the driver, set it up, and make it share the net connection. Thanks guys,

    Craig

While it may seem a good idea to make the SBS server the internet gateway, this box is usually pretty busy with everything else, IT may not be the best idea to make this the internet gateway as well???.

If you've got a router is it one that has to be connected to a machine via USB or is it a 4 port hub one?. if its a small office which it sounds it might be, i'd maybe query the way they are thinking about doing it?.

Otherwise, you need to install the network card, if it doesn't automatically detect the drivers, then just find the network card in system, and update the drivers, from the web or the driver disk you've got for it.

As for sharing the network connection, there isn't such a thing as ICS (internet connection sharing) on NT4 from memory, so you'd just connect the router to the SBS and then make all the other machines have the IP address of the network card put into all the other machines default gateway.

By doing this it would route all the traffic that it didn't know where to get, to the SBS and by doing this the router's/ISP's DNS server would route the traffic out to the internet.

But make sure the SBS/Router has appropriate security measures and is patched to locked down to ensure it can't be hacked or logged into remotely.

Any more question please ask, happy to explain more if needed

TiG, you missed out the most important bit!

After shutting the system down to install the card, You offer up several silent prayers to the NT4 gods, that the system comes back up again!

This should help a little but be sure to read the follow on article!
