That intentional delay is a mere two seconds, Agent. And even 8MB can be written in less than a second.

This is certainly a Network thing....have done the folllowing test three times, same result.

Boot into Safe Mode WITHOUT Network support: Boot down in seconds

Boot into Safe Mode WITH Network support: Boot down after the Windows is Shutting screen.....2 minutes

    Its a network thingumy

    Mobo : Asus A7N8X normal (version 1.04)
    Built in netwrok card....so Nvidia

XP Pro, all latest patches..,.....its perfectly safe to just hit the power button after about 15 seconds, so WHY wont it just switch off on its own ?

Shrug, uninstall the network card, dissable some of the network related services and see what happens. Reinstall with a [different] fixed IP address in a new workgroup and have another go.

I've got a similar problem with 98SE at the moment!

When shutting down, the monitor will switch itself off OK but the rest stays active. I have to shut down by holding in the on/off button. This happens 99% of the time - very occasionally it will shut down properly by itself.

Oddly enough I also have to press the on/off button twice to get it to start up. This makes me think that it might be a hardware problem (I recently installed a new mobo/processor), but I can't think what might be wrong.

I know it would probably be a good idea to do a clean reinstall of windows, but the thought finding and reinstalling all my apps properly fills me with horror!

    Anyone any ideas?

I have the same problem yet i am on Windows Xp pro. A group of us friends found out that it is actually due to windows not being able to shut down properly because it cannot close a program. Usually it's because it cannot shutdown the transciever software (yes that green alcatel frog thing that you call your ADSL modem)

There's no fix for it afaik so occasionally your system crashes on shut down or takes a long time to shut down and can even BSOD if you're super lucky
