How easy is Debian to use? (I'm not a dipstick by the way! )

And what sort of compatibility does it have with modern components?

its one of harder distros to install, but the use is pretty much the same as any other distro, with an "ok" package manager. I am assuming you mean "desktop" when you say how easy is it to use, in which case, choose the desktop you find the easiest to use.

The compatablity is down to the kernel version - not the distro, I suggest you check which version of the kernel will be installed with your distro/release and work out the compatablity from there.
    It is Inevitable.....

the current debian releases (stable, 3.0 r2; testing 3.1 pre-rc2) come with 2.2.20/2.4.18 and 2.4.27/2.6.8.1 respectively
