    No internet after gentoo install

    Ok after rebooting from install it said the following

    * Failed to load echo
    * Failed to load via-rhine.0.

    Couple of lines then loaded other stuff then:

    * Failed to bring eth0 up

    *ERROR : Problem starting needed services

    * "netmount" was not started

    Ok im useing a VIA VT6102 Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter, (onboard). I have also edited various files like the install told me, however im not sure if their right:

    nano -w /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4

    via-rhine.0.

    nano -w /etc/conf.d/net

    iface_eth0="dchp"
    #dhcp_etho="..."

    i took "#" away from the last line. Is that correct? I have also:

    rc-update add net.eth0 default.

    When i included Via Rhin support in the kernel i made it a module. I would really appreciate any help in this matter. Thanks

    EDIT: as u might of gathered im useing an NTL cable modem, if that would help (Swansea is my nearest ntl server). And i havent set a domain name code listing 19.2 in the install. Shoud i have done this?

    Indeed i have. and it gives an error. the only time that works is if i add dummy before via-rhine. my modules.autoload, /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4 and i think one other file (not sure tho) contain dummy via-rhine. when i did ls /lib/modules/2*/kernel/drivers/net it came back with: dummy.o via-rhine.o i was told when adding the driver or whatever to the autoload.modules section not to inclue the ".o" part, so in each file i have to edit it says dummy via-rhine, then modprobe picks it up(im asumeing it does cos it just goes to another command line without saying nething)

    Just done what u said and it says:

    Module size used by Not Tainted

    dummy 1212 0 (unused)

    Seeing that 0 leads me to belive that somthing is not being detected. Would i be right?

    if it doesn't say via-rhine, than there is something wrong with the module. don't have the source for the kernel on my server at the moment, but maybe the driver for via-rhine depends on something else? have a look trhough the kernel documentation.
    is there any chance you could try another lan card, that doesn't use via-rhine chipset? intel cards usually work fine.

    with modprobe dummy via-rhine you're loading the dummy network driver and the rhine network driver. shouldn';t be a problem, but somehow ur machine doesn't load the via-rhine driver. looking on google and deja there are a few others who have problems with via-rhine modules

    Do i need to load the dummy modules ie. just load the via ones? Or do i need both of them. Im also on an amd type of machine and i dont have a pci network card. Is it worth me recompiling the kernel so that its exactly the same as the live cd, there are instuctions in the install which tell you how to do this?

    as far as i remember you don't need the dummy driver. well its not loaded on my server. can you install the original kernel from the gentoo cd? don't have gentoo here. if you can't install the kernel from the cd, try to compile a new kernel. have a look at the gentoo website www.gentoo.org if there is something said about via-rhine.

    Why not just compile the network card into the kernel, as opposed to as a module?

    thats with the[*] and NOT [m] i take it? Ive tired that already, but i havent tried it without the dummy module. ill give it a go. Is there anything i need to do if i use the[*] option, as far as setting it up for use after the kernal has installed?

    Yeah, m is module and * is compiled into the kernel.

    If you do compile it into the kernel, you should not have to do anything else to get things working - just try and bring the network interface up...

    In debian it's in /etc/modules

    Try

    grep modules /etc/*

    Will probably find the file...
