I suppose it really depends on what you're wanting to monitor - "resources" is a bit of a catchall term, but Nagios is pretty much the daddy of monitoring.
Does the "top" command not work with unix?

Yes, you can use the top command.
I've been fighting for a long time, monitoring unix systems with zabbix, nagios ... and the easiest tool for me has been PandoraFMS. They have a very complete Open library modules where I could find all the commands that are used to monitor the system, and that the way to create modules is directly using system commands. The library is available on their website.
