    WMI Service Fail

    Hello,

Not really a problem, just a minor annoyance. I get this little error box pop up, every time I start the computer. In the blue top bar of the box is "WMI Service Fail" and the message reads "WMI Service connect fail! Please check your service settings or user's privilege. I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1, no idea even what WMI is, any idea how to stop this error popping up. Either by fixing the problem or stopping it some other way?

    Thanks

    Best Regards

Windows Management Instrumentation. Is this recent? If so can you remember what you have installed or changed that what result in the error?

First I would suggest opening the MMC Computer Management (either right click on my computer and choose manage or access it through control panel under administrative tools). Check under 'Services and Applications' and then right 'WMI Control' and choose properties. If it succesfully connects you should see a properties window. If not click on 'Services' and check to see if any services pertinent to WMI have been disabled.

You at work or is this on your own machine?. WMI is windows management instrumentation which is a crap way of saying system monitor.

it will run things like windows scripts to connect to network paths etc. I'm guessing its something from a work network - the sort of thing an IT admin will have run to set all your network shares to a specific place.

After checking the windows help on this it appears to be part of the winmgmt process.

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scr...es/wmifaq.mspx

further information there on how to stop it if you want, or find out the source of the problem.

    Hope that helps

    Hi,

Thanks for your reply. To be honest it could have been anything, I recently reinstalled windows and because of that I've installed all my software in a short space of time, so I don't know what could have caused it.

I followed your instructions and it connected fine.

It is connecting fine which is good. Open up services and check 'Windows Management Instrumentation'. Make sure the service is started and it's startup type is automatic. Make sure log on is local system account and it is attached to the hardwareprofile you use.

    Hi,

Yes it is automatic, although the next entry down "Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions" is set to manual.

With regards to the system profile, its enabled on the only profile in the list "Profile 1"

In that case I believe your WMI repository has become corrupt. Just do one more thing and choose restart service for WMI and see if you receive the error again. Just click yes/ok if it says it needs to rstart other services.

Tried what you said, rebooted, same error. Is it possible to disable the service and still run windows normally?

Thanks for all your help btw

A lot of applications depend on WMI, but you could try to disable it and see if anything suffers. Look at the link TiG posted from about question 8 for some possible solutions.
