Winxp seeing computers on a workgroup

    Hi.

I have a home network of 6 computers. All have win2k installed, except for 1 which has winxp home (i cant install win2k as its dad's computer)

All the computers are on the same workgroup, and have ip's 192.168.0.*, all of the win2k computers can see each other, as well as seeing the winxp machine.

However the winxp machine cannot not see any other computers on the same workgroup, it can ping them, but cannot see them.

The question is how can i make the winxp machine see the win2k machines?

    Thanks
    Will.

iirc, you have to use the win XP disk to install winXP networking on them all, or use the XP disk on the XP machine to create a network setup disk.

HAd similar probs a short time ago. Took ages to sort

There's probably a much simpler way. But I know nowt about networking.

file and print sharing enabled on the xp machine ??????

if its got service pack 2 on it - it could be a firewall related issue (or an external to xp firewall - such as zonealarm - must have the other machines zone on trusted network)

If the above doesn't work, try editing the hosts file (do a search and include hidden files and folders) on one of the machines and adding in the names of all the other machines on the workgroup beside their IP address. If this fixes it, then its probably a netBIOS issue.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the replies.

I made a little bit of progress, it can now see one of the computers running win2k, and one running winME (sorry i forgot to meantion that before!)

NetBIOS,NETBEUI,TCP/IP are all running, as is file+printer sharing.

It has SP2 installed, as well as norton 2000 i think; however as it can see 1 computer i dont think that it is a firewall issue.

I shall try what roberiwin has suggested later on this afternoon.

Anymore ideas i would be grateful to hear them Otherwise i guess i will have to do as 0iD suggests....

    Thanks
    Will.

For those that want to know the resolution for this problem, i just installed all the protocol's on the computer i was trying to access (from winxp) and that sorted it.

    Thanks for the help
