    Is it possible to i.link/firewire/IEE1394 two computers together for file transfer?

    I have two laptops with firewire, a suitable firewire cable, and some big files in need of transfer.

    Since one laptop is equiped with only USB1.1, is there an app i can download or something that will let me transfer files accross speedy firewire?

    Got XP? Plug them together, Firewire supports TCP/IP
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();

    Hmm, is there some sort of wizard or they just go for it just like that?

    Sounds too good to be true

    It works just the same as setting up a network card, in fact if you check you'll probably find half the work has already been done for you without your realising it.

    Just make sure TCP/IP and file sharing are enabled for the connection.

    There's a network setup wizard in XP - plug the comps together and run it... see if that works

    Argh, its just always so uncontrollable, i'll sometimes get it right and have absolutely no idea what i did to get it to work.

    A bit like the wi-fi router set up , is there a program that just does it proper on its own. I have something near-perfect for USB but as mentioned USB is too slow

    OK, plug them together, and go into network connections. for the 1394 connection go in and edit the TCP/IP settings - set IP to 192.168.0.2 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 on one machine and IP 192.168.0.3 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 on the other - that should get you started

    Thanks,

    but see, this is what annoys me, after the wizard and then after a couple of restarts it just starts working on its own, i'm still left without a clue on what i did right or wrong.

    But its working, for now at least, very fast
