Drive Letter Assigning

After this second installation of Windows XP on a new PC I've just built, Windows appears to assign the primary drive (and only HDD in the machine) to G:\, while assinging C:\ to the internal memory card reader

When choosing a partition to install it on in XP Setup it reports the partition to be C:\ but as soon as I complete installation and boot into Windows for the first time it has changed to G:\ Assignments follow:

Floppy: A:
Removable Disk: C:
Removable Disk: D:
DVD-RAM Drive: E:
DVD Drive: F:
Local Disk: G:

If I were to disconnect the media reader before installation, install Windows, then hook it up again should that default Windows to C:?

I tried the registry editing method of changing drive letter, but then the machine wouldn't boot!

Please advise.

Best way to stop any unwanted devices getting assigned a letter you don't want it to is to disconnect everything but the harddrive you're installing to, like you said.

as soon as you get into windows the first time, shut down, plug power back into everything else, and then change drive letters for other things within the windows MMC

Get Tweak XP as well as being able to change drive letters you can do loads more stuff with it

You change the drive letters in one of the Admin tools (not sure which - can't check since I'm not in Windows at the moment).

However, since you would be changing the drive letters of the drive with programs and Windows on, it would probably be best just to reformat. (Just reread your post - you already found out the problem with just changing letters is!)

Right click on My Computer & choose 'Manage'. From there choose the HDD tool & you can change drive letters.

Probably won't work for the drive you have windows installed on though.
