Question Monitoring network bandwidth usage on TS Server

Trying to find out what the bottleneck is, the obvious one is the ADSL line, however, on running management software on the Dell server, its only uploading at 6kb/s which is still within the up.

I need a software package to monitor/record the usage so that we can look to move to either bonded dsl or SDSL.

Anyone recommend a package to do such a job?

    Server is running 2003 Standard.

    Thanks

how many users on the TS box ?

windows performance monitoring shoudl tell you most of what you need.

do the users print heavily ?

    Hi Moby,

There are a total of 16 users, not always on either.

They run one application from TS, one issue which the new development team are looking into, is its DB is Access 97 based

I havent used Perfmon on 2003 & I havent used it in quite a while (NT4 days)

    Care to refresh my memory?

lol dont get me started on access db's

its not changed too much , just add the network counters , althought you might have to install the network monitor drivers first ( control panel )

I'm fresh from having just finished my SQl exams , so if you want any hints on moving it to SQL

one of the problems with acess is that it tend to lock entire tables IIRC which would slow things down a lot.

Your not kidding Moby, the issue with access idling at 50% cpu, with 16 copies of access open, the cpu is always at 100%, however, ive noticed the HT is not being used, which would help no end....

As for the database, SQL is the best route, but not the cheapest, there is a possibility they might use the latest version of Access, but the customer is waiting to hear back...

Access is designed as a single user DB (hence the locks), why do people decide to use it as a multi user DB i will never know. I swear that developers who use access should be shot!.

MSDE or SQL Express are both possibilities and in real terms unlikely to take much changing to make them work.

Superb, Visual Studio 2005 installs as standard. So i've dropped MSDE from my box infavour of Express. Its so slick. Management interface is so much superior to the non existant (web) console to MSDE.

But as with SQL 2005 STD and ENT it requires a lot more processing power as standard to just run.

Just a note that its not finished though, even though its released, there are bits missing (the cut down reporting services with express doesn't work yet)

I know as i've tried it and then when it didn't work i hacked it to work, and then it did a Version check and informed me that Reporting service won't work on Express yet (even though the MS web site says it will)

Our MS Technical contact advised us that there is a big difference between what is claimed on the web site and what actually exists in the product.

Looking at this from another angle, do you chaps know of any software I could run on each client pc, something like net limiter, has to run in the taskbar & it need it to record the amount of data sent & received & it has to be free?

Reason I ask this is im wondering if someone is using the offices ADSL to download..

    Thanks
