i recently tried ot install ubuntu, i dotn kno where but it installed (im guessing on my current Windows XP Hadrdisc somewhere... problem is now when i try to boot that harddrive, it come up with something like 'GRUB or GRIB? 1.5 booting or osmething, then it says error, surely thats Ubuntu and not my Windows? anyone got any ideas?
Grub is the linux boot loader.
When you see the message about grub loading, hit escape, you should get a menu of boot options. One of those should be your old windows install.
What exactly are the error messages / messages displayed in the screen before the error messages?
What is the hard drive arrangement? One hard drive with Windows and one with Ubuntu?

im not sure thats the thing! i believe (if im tryign to boot off my windows Hard Disc and GRUB comes up it must be there?
ive tried hittign ecscape.. it dont seem to work :S
can i somehow remove ubuntu completely?
anyways heres what it says:
As chrestomanci says, GRUB is a bootloader whch can boot Windows or Linux. The 1.5 probably refers to an intermediate file GRUB uses to boot Windows (a chain loader).
Ubuntu has installed GRUB on the Master Boot Record of the hard drive - as it has to to be able to boot Ubuntu, and it should have taken care of the Windows boot as well.
If the boot options don't come up after following chrestomanci's advice, you can either start tinkering with GRUB (it is a self contained program) but to do that you will need to boot into Ubuntu first. Alternatively you can use an XP rescue disk (or the XP CD to recreate the MBR for a windows boot only, but in that case you won't be able to boot Ubuntu without re-installing GRUB - and if you are a newb, your best bet would be to install Ubuntu again from scratch.
Sorry - I started writing this before the other rreplies appeared. Error 17 meands that GRUB can see the boot partition but it can't read the file system, but I'm not sure if that is very helpful without knowning how the disk is partitioned.
I am correct in assuming that you created a completely separate partition for your Ubuntu install....???

ill try to use the xp cd then, and tbh i have no idea how it installed... it was very confusing the partition stage, and also i looked on partition magic and it dotn seeem to have 2 partitions just one NTFS part.
You don't need to use partition magic. To get windows back you can boot using a windows CD, select fix boot from the recovery console.

Getting rid of ubuntu is easy. Just delete the partion once you get the PC to boot into windows.
Problem is, it is starting to sounds like you have deleted your windows install. If you have, you have bigger problems. You can check by booting the system from a knoppix CD and checking which partitions it finds, and what is on them. If it can't find any files that look like a windows install, you have probably lost them.
well it is 'there' because the repair cd finds it on the C:// Drive...
ive got ubuntu on a CD still, any thoughts on how i could perhaps install it somewhere and delete it or delete a linux partition or something?
how many hard disks do you have, and how are they connected to your pc?
There are ways, but I don't feel like writing lengthy instructions with code samples, and I don't think you have enough linux experience to correctly sort it out if I tell you to run lilo and use the bios=... parameter.Originally Posted by jackvdbuk

boot the linux cd, run "sudo fdisk -l" from a terminal, and paste the output in here
sorry guys... thanks alot for the ideas but ive just given upi just formatted and am going to install XP tomorow... in future im just going to buy a proper PHYSICAL HDD and load ubuntu onto that
just too much for me
