Talking Just entered the End 2 End

Basically a mountain bike race from one end of the island to the other. It's on the 14th of September, and the route is here: http://www.gov.im/lib/docs/tourism/2...toendnorth.pdf (north section) and here: http://www.gov.im/lib/docs/tourism/2...toendsouth.pdf (south section)

    Nice.

Just sent off my entry form for the Viking Challenge. 50km, though I'm told quite a lot of it is fairly tame.

Making me miss a bit of competition, reading this

If it's anything like my racing, you spend the whole time thinking "Why the HELL am I doing this?" then get to the end and think "that was great!"

Yep. Did a section today - the first climb out of Ballaugh up the Ballacobb track..... mein gott what an evil evil climb.. then onto the bit I've already done, across Slieu Maggle down the Zig-Zags into St John's and leaving the course there, back to Glen Vine All in all, just over 20 miles in 2 and a bit hours. Should be alright on the day as far as checkpoints and things.. might even get in under the 6 hour mark if I'm lucky and don't have any mechanical problems....

Re: Just entered the End 2 End

Well.. that was fun.. right until the moment I had a big off at the bottom of Arrasey Plantation where it became a touch less fun.

    Still - I finished... 467th out of 504 finishers in 6hr 19mins.

The mud was unbelievable, and the "ruts" across the top were so bad, they could have been used in 1914....

Re: Just entered the End 2 End

well the bike is to put it simply... sh4gged... it was that muddy, it needs all the cables/outers replacing, it ate both front and rear sets of brake pads - down to the backing on the rear and not much more left on the front, headset is goosed - makes a loverly noise when you turn the bars, cranks and bottom bracket have had it, although they were on the way out anyway, the bearings have fallen out of the rear hub - which may have done for the freehub too - the cassette needs changing, new chain and possibly new front and rear derailluers.

On the me side, I've torn my left ankle to bits again - exactly the same as when I did it in not 4 weeks ago, my legs don't seem to work properly anymore and I had a good go at excising my right calf muscle with the chainrings during my "incident" Oh.. and I can't sit properly either...

    Bloody good day's work tbh

Re: Just entered the End 2 End

Nice one, sounds like a normal day out for me

The weather as of late has turned many a trail into an absolute mud bath around here. The Viking Challenge I'm doing next month is known to be a bit of a sod for mud as well, so that'll be interesting.

Might order a couple of spare sets of pads in, judging by your experience chap!

Gonna have to invest in some decent shin/knee protection as well, because my pedals *will* tear my shins apart when I come off. It's already a forgone conclusion I'll have an off lol!

Re: Just entered the End 2 End

If conditions where you are be anything like over here, then get the spare pads, and a dish sponge or something would be useful too, to clear any exposed parts of your cable runs - nothing more tiring than constantly trying to find a gear that will stay on towards the end.

Someone has actually suggested renaming Surby to The Somme it was that bad

It's heavy mud that makes you hunt around for old 8 speed XT stuff!
