Its a lesson that audley harrison learnt after sydney. The olympics is a lot more about technical skill and about landing punches for the refs to see. Professional boxing is a lot more about power.

I was talking last night with a mate and looking through all the weights there dont seem to be many big fights on the horizon. in the last year we had hatton - mayweather and calzaghe - hopkins but now that they have happened a lot of the areas look a bit sparse imo

Surely in a ring your there to fight, when your in a fight you get hit, I blame the trainer.

The best fighters are the ones who can come back from a loss such as this only time will tell if Amir will make it. Personally I think he needed some of his own medicine and if he comes through it hopefully it will make him a better fighter.

Re: Amir Khan - Pathetic or Funny?

Clearly I hear the views of the arm chair pundits who have not aspired to putting on the gloves and mouthshields. Lets not forget this young man is an olympic champion so clearly he has got talent. His defence has been suspect in the past and now its been proven. Better for it to happen now than later I say.

I come back to my old mantra which is if a lot of British stars
with the exception of Lennox had been brought up in Brazil, America , Switzerland ( tennis)etc. they would be better atheletes. IF Bruno had been brought up in america his fighting style would have been so much better and he would have been devastating fighter, I dont know whether its the air or the food but its definitely something which is preventing us Brits from performing at the highest level. Maybe there should be some research done on this.

I have no problems putting gloves on and stepping in the ring.
His trainer as well as Amir himself should of known his weakness and trained to reduce the gap's that exploited his weakness..

Re: Amir Khan - Pathetic or Funny?

Khan got what was coming to him. Answer to the question was ,,,, Funny.

His chin was always in question and people like Frank Warren knew this. They made Khan fight easy opponents to make him a big money fighter and they got there wish on Sky box office.
But he was never going to be world class. The real boxing trainers , pundits all knew this. But he was lead to believe he would be this good. He is very badly advised.
I still believe he is a good fighter, his technical boxing is very good. He has good reach which gives him spark to his style. But anyone who is in a high class will knock him out as his chin will not take it.

If he is a great fighter he will come back stronger and prove any questioners wrong. If he is not , then he'll go back to fighting nobody's.

Short lived , but enjoyed the fight.

Can you train yourself out of having a glass chin? Will repeated blows to the head make you accustomed to them? Or are the real superstar boxers lucky enough to be born with extra cushioning round their brains?

I'm only interested, is all. I'm ugly enough without having a broken nose, so I don't plan to try and make it as a prize fighter.

Like anything else you have to work on your weak points, that is what the team around Amir will do. Low gloves and chin sticking out should be a thing of the past if he wants to be world champion. Amir is fighting in a competitive weight category but he has what it takes, hand speed, a history of putting them on the floor and above all not cutting easily. History has shown the really good champions and i dont need to mention any names because we all know who they are never got bad cuts. If our Henry
was not prone to cutting he would have given the Yanks a harder fight.

David Haye i think is the only shining light in british boxing at present, i think he easy past the heavy weights tbh, he looks awesome, but again in the heavys you can me made to look poor with one sweet punch.

Re: Amir Khan - Pathetic or Funny?

    Anyone watch the Khan-Barrera fight?

absolutely blazing performance by Khan, he was superb from the start. Barrera never even got a look in!
Tbf, it was a completely different Barrera to the one that punished Prince Naseem Hamed 8ish years ago.

    Top boxing.

Re: Amir Khan - Pathetic or Funny?

Was a good fight yes, Khans speed was amazing, he was on top of Barrera from the get go.

However I can't help but think, would the fight have been different if Barrera hadn't picked up the cut in the first round?

I mean Barrera himself said both that he couldn't see Khan and that Khan's punche's weren't hurting him.

And the one round, when Barrera did make decent contact with Khan, Khan was rocked a little.

Re: Amir Khan - Pathetic or Funny?

Khan looked much better yesterday especially his defence. Its quite clear that new trainer has had a positive impact.

Anyhow the cut was definitely a disadvantage for Barrera as he was playing with one eye. However I still think Khan would have won it. It would have not been a KO, but I imagine it would have gone to 12 rounds and Khan would have won it on points. Afterall Barrera is 35 and Khan is 22.

Re: Amir Khan - Pathetic or Funny?

Khan did well but the cut and the weight difference (Khan is a big lightweight; Barrera is not a natural lightweight) had a major affect.

Nevertheless, a good improvement for Khan. I'd like to see him have another go against Prescott but I doubt Warren will want that.

However Khan is not ready for Marquez or Diaz.
