    Andy Gray has been sacked!

Just read on football 365 and bbc.

I thought it was a bit harsh given that Most blokes prolly said similar things when they saw sian massey come out the tunnel but it seems it was also for making lewd comments towards charlotte jackson as well.

Re: Andy Gray has been sacked!

Shocked to be honest, I didn't expect this at all - he's a huge asset for Sky.

As much as I think the comments he made were ridiculous, I'm pretty disappointed. Others might disagree, but I thought he was a great commentator, will miss his presence on Sky. I wonder whether he'll be snapped up by ITV or ESPN...

Thing is snooty if it was just for that comment then I`d agree but it seems he`d made pervy comments at charlotte as well which is sexual harrassment so he had to go

Re: Andy Gray has been sacked!

Yeah I think it put Sky in a very awkward position. They could easily explain the first away - saying he'd been warned officially, but to then say "he was warned officially, and warned even more officially for the other events that came to light" wouldn't really wash.

He didn't give them a whole lot of choice.

Re: Andy Gray has been sacked!

From what i have heard (being in the broadcast industry) the guy is a sexist pig all the time in off-air situations so he was damned unlucky that this got out (or lucky something didnt get out earlier). In a similar fashion to the Gordon Brown's 'Biggoted Woman' comment i find it quite unproffessional towards the production team responsible for him.

I laughed at a youtube comment which went along the lines of:
"Oh it's different when a bunch of z-list bitches on day-time tv shows like loose women call men retards and pigs all day isn't it."
But I agree that he deserved a sacking.

Re: Andy Gray has been sacked!

Cant say i know much about him or his behaviour, as i don't use sky for my football viewing, but it does seem that his position was rather untenable seeing as it is not just one episode of this happening from the reports.

Re: Andy Gray has been sacked!

If there is any substance to the second allegation of lewd comments towards Charlotte Jackson, then in real terms Sky had no option but to sack him. Whether or not his subsequent action in this regard goes anywhere will probably be down to what actually is in his contract.

As for the double standards in regards to women getting away with slagging off men in general, then it's pretty much par for the course for our over-sensitive politically correct society. Of course "crying wolf" all the time is actually counter-productive as it instills a sense of resentment in those that are on the wrong end of the claims. This can then lead to conscious or subconcious discrimination, undermining any good work in undermining any gains towards eliminating such behaviour.

Re: Andy Gray has been sacked!

People at work were talking of a conspiracy theory, as Andy Gray is suing News of the World and then all these things leaked and now he's sacked; coincidence?

There`s a video of him making comments towards Charlotte on the bbc website. He`s asking her to tuck him in at the front in a really letchy manner.

This would appear to be a summary dissmal on the basis of gross missconduct, which then brings into what constitutes this as outlined within his contract and Sky's policies. However, we have no way of knowing at this stage as to whether this was the final straw with him having been given due process i.e. warnings etc. in regard to his behaviour.

As a pundit he was meant to be brilliant. Much like the Sun sports section being good I have never been able to understood who started these rumours until they suddenly became fact.

Good riddance if he thinks he can treat people like that.

As long as we don't end up with Stan 'wife-beater' Collymore, or Jamie 'Son-of-Droopy' Redknapp.
They are both serious Brown Hatters.

Re: Andy Gray has been sacked!

Going around my work there is the conspiracy theory that the audio was leaked to the press by sky management because Andy Gray is one of the people suing News of the World (also Murdock company) for cracking their phone, they always knew what he was like but this is punishment and a way to terminate his contract.

Re: Andy Gray has been sacked!

If, and I stress if the stories of his activities are true, then I'd entirely support Sky's actions. It's one less Neanderthal throwback in the media, and perhaps sends a clear message to the others.

From what I can gather, it's like this :-

Incident 1) Disparaging remarks about female ref, off-camera and supposedly private. Well, we're all entitled to personal opinions and to voice them, but doing so as a media personality risks looking unprofessional and reflecting badly on your employer.

The moral of the story? If you're a public figure, be it media, politics, art, whatever, what you say IS going to be on the news if it's controversial BECAUSE you're a public figure. Is it a sacking offence? Depends on his contract, IMHO, but probably not. Which is what happened. A slapdown for being a pillock, partly in saying it and partly in getting caught. When will public figures learn about "stings" and tittle-tattle for sale?

Incident 2) Some entirely and apparently illegal remarks and suggestions. Sorry, but for this one, can his ass. In this day and age, after decades of equality legislation, if some dinosaurs either are so stupid as to not know of the law, or so arrogant as to think they can ignore it, then they deserve what they get and I've absolutely no sympathy for if at all, if the story is as reported.

It's like this. If you're thinking lewd thoughts about a (opposite sex or same sex) co-worker, that's fine. And probably natural. But keep you're size 43 gob shut, or it makes you into a sexist pratt.

Some people don't seem to realise that their attentions may be wholly unwelcome, and unpleasant for the object of them, especially in the workplace where it's hard to avoid, and even more so if the person making the remarks is either the boss or a prima-donna "star". A remark or two might be flattering, but a pattern of it is harassment, so even the remark or two ought to be kept to yourself. And it seems that some people, even if making a remark or two, don't know how far to go in what they say, or when it goes from flattering to a damn nuisance.

So, the only practical rule in the workplace is not to go there at all. Otherwise, you risk making life uncomfortable, at the very least, for a co-worker. And, I wonder, what would have been the outcome if a member of the production crew had complained a but remarks from a "star"? Would the star have been removed, or the co-worker re-assigned?

I'm not a football fan, and have no knowledge of or interest in either this individual or his program, beyond what I've seen in the news. But, based on what has been reported, Sky have acted properly, in slapping him down for inappropriate remarks off-camera and in sacking him for unacceptable and perhaps illegal activities when the second (and apparently earlier) incidents came to light.

It's one less Neanderthal in the limelight, and perhaps any other Neanderthals out there will hear the message and if so, professionalism in the workplace will advance a step.
