Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)

Really should start a new thread but the title still feels appropriate...

It's nearly time for the Tyne-Wear derby. Which, can we all agree, is at the very least in the top 3 of UK based derbys, if not the top derby.

    So what's everyone's opinion/estimations?

Now that the pressure is on us to extend the winning streak we're going to snap.

1-0 the mags in a game totally devoid of talent but with 10 yellow cards and Cattermole sent off in the first half.

Its easily the derby with the most fierce history. Annoyingly, it also still feels like a 6 pointer, which as a Newcastle fan is ridiculous given the money we have spent.

There is also the Manchester Derby which is a pretty big deal this season for the opposite reason, the winner of it could quite easily be in with a chance of the title.

My Dads naively thinks the Toon have got this one in the bag. I, like you perhaps, think this one will be decided on discipline.

Norwich was a great confidence booster for us and it really demonstrated how well we can play going forward, but our defense is still a shambles, our midfielders don't track back enough to support our badly organized defensive line (which why I would say that the Norwich scoreline does not tell the full story of the game).
Big Sam wont let the Mackams leave the same kind of space as Norwich did, hes going to have all that locked down and try to play his usual root-1 football which is exactly the kind of thing that could catch us out.
I think its going to be a very physical, hard fought game. Newcastle will have the possession statistics, im fairly certain, but I really cant make a call on the scoreline. It all depends who gets the first red card....

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)

Big Sam will park the bus, build a wall round that, and have Defoe/Fletcher marauding 3/4 up the pitch trying to reach the long ball hoofed out the back.

Newcastle will adopt the leaky sieve approach of recent weeks, and if Sissoco is properly man-marked there'll be none of last week's shenanigans for them to hope for.

I think it's going to be a 2-1 Sunderland. Newcastle getting one lucky goal from somewhere. Sunderland won't keep a clean sheet. If however Sunderland go down to 10 men - well. That's a different story and a 2-2 draw is on the cards, possibly even 3-2.

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)

You should be winning by now. 45 minutes solid pressure. Coloccini didnt need to do that as Elliot was out fast enough. But it was a clear foul in a goal scoring oppurtunity.

Well took by Johnson. Game on now.

Yeah we have been playing very very well.
Its a shame that the only bad decision the ref has made, as far as I have seen, would have been a penalty in the other box that would have put us in the lead and prevented that debacle happening.

I may be bias but I wouldn't say that's a penalty. If you would give that as handball you would have needed to give Colback's stray hand earlier in the game. And the 'grab' was Gini trying to run under Cattermoles arms. Not Cat's fault he got caught in them.

Regarding the pen, it was a pen. Not sure on it being a red. Could probably have gotten away with a yellow.

Also, did anyone watch the Manchester derby? What utter rubbish!

I will grant you the handball probably wasn't deliberate and he didn't know much about it, just the same as Colback, fair decision.
The obstruction though, he left one arm up deliberately and moved toward Gini to make sure there was contact. It would have been a foul anywhere else in the pitch and was a stonewall penalty in my eyes and the SKY pundits generally agreed.
I urge you to watch it again if you really believe he had no malicious intent (I have it recorded on youview and literally just watched it).

For Cattermole not to be given a card throughout that match was a disgrace. He committed far too many fouls, at least three of them being solid yellow card offences (knee in the back of Perez, scissor legs challenge that took Colback off injured and previously mentioned one on Gini), and he went un-penalised. I think Newcastle fans have every right to feel hard done by the refs performance in that regard.

I would have felt it was generous to give a yellow if I'm honest. It was last man back on a goal scoring opportunity so if its a foul, its a red card by letter of the law. The rule itself I think is a bit ridiculous.

I guess you could argue that Coloccini had every right to fight for that ball as they were side by side and fletcher didn't actually touch it, but he used far too much force.

End of the day, our obstruction call ended up in a red card and man sent off which gifted Sunderland a game that they didnt look like they were in at all. If the call had been made at the other end, the score likely would have been the other way round.

Referee's decision decided the outcome of the game.

I don't think Colocini should have been sent off. But it was a foul, and therefore a penalty. Tonight I will be eating Pizza. Nom nom nom.

    It's contentious.

"An Independent Regulatory Commission found that the match referee had made an obvious error in dismissing the Newcastle United defender for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity," said an FA statement.
Ouch. Hard to just drop a hammer on the ref. It wasn't obvious. It was EXTREMELY not obvious. The FA have decided that ruling was wrong but it took an entire panel and I bet MANY replays of the same 10 second clip for them to obviously decide.

If anything, this is a poster-child situation for a video ref!

I thought you did well. Their keeper just had a blinder of a game. Sometimes it happens. I'd rather have seen your performance than be a Chelsea fan atm.

(for clarity, I'm not a chelsea fan)

I guess. We hit the post a couple times in the first half when the score was 0-0 and 2-1 (I think). But you've got to take your chances!

At least it would have been interesting to watch if you weren't a Sunderland fan!
