hitachi 750 gig hard drive showing wrong size!

Hi, okay, first of all, this is not one of those questions that hinge on the definition of gigabyte as 1000MB vs 1024MB.

I'm at the Windows setup screen. My 750 gig drive is showing two partitions. One is about 2TB. The other is about 16TB.

I'm on another PC right now so I don't have the exact numbers or a screenshot.

Has anyone heard of this before? Also, is there any utility that I can use that will low-level format this thing or w/e so that it actually shows the correct amount?

P.S. The Window's setup format option can't format the mysterious 16TB volume it b/c it encounters an error.

It CAN format the 2TB volume, but only if I specify an exact number like 600,000,000 MB (which is by my recollection, 750GB in megabytes [786,432,000], minus a bit more to be safe. If I try to format the entire 2TB it will throw an error.

    Thanks

    Screwy!

Could try overwriting the MBR using your OS install disk, otherwise you might need to look up reflashing the firmware.

Something on that drive is messed up and corrupt.

Go grab the Hitachi diagnostics tools and run them. There should be an option to run a low level format on the drive, or the tools will tell you it there is a more serious problem.

I had that problem with a 500 gig external, ran all the diag tools I could find but none of them gave any errors. When I formatted the drive it was being reported as an 84 gig drive, took the thing back to the retailer who changed it for another.

    yep fully agree there.
And if a low level format still results in it giveing the wrong size info then it sounds like the firmware is corrupt.
You caould try updating that, however if the actual firmware chip is damaged then it'll not help.

The only options then would be to replace the pcb (if possible) but only if it's out of warranty.

If it is in warranty I'd be tempted to RMA it anyway.

lol the drive error scanner thing takes forever. I have a feeling it will get an error as soon as it goes into a sector that doesn't exist.

I think i'll try re-flashing the firmware, if I can. Thanks
