    N4100+ strange data transfer problems

    Hi,

I have had this NAS for a while, and have it kitted out with 4 x 750gb drives in RAID5. For the most part I have been happy with it, but am experiencing a very odd, and VERY annoying problem.

I use it for storing video files that I have encoded from my DVD collection, for easy access around the house. I do this on my PC, then copy them to the NAS. Most files transfer fine, but a select few (3 so far) copy a small amount, and then crash my wireless network.

Yes, I know it sounds crazy, but the entire network goes down and both PCs drop off of it. The files in question have been encoded in just the same way as the thousands of others that I have transferred, but every time without fail cause the network to crash at exactly the same point in the transfer.

Am i the only one with this bizarre issue? Can anyone suggest a fix? As a workaround, can I plug in a USB external drive to the NAS and transfer them onto it from that directly?

    Thanks in advance,

    Kata

Re: N4100+ strange data transfer problems

I had in the recent past some experiences where I was unable to copy a specific file and Windows was pointing out that it was an IO error.

The problem was in fact with the file itself though I could open/modify/save it on the machine where it was stored. I had to do some past & copy for one and UNZIP & ZIP for another one -without removing the original one to leave them occupy the suspicious area.

So at 1st sight the HDD of these files was damaged on the area where the files were.

I mentioned that w.r.t. your issue as if the files were to be copied to a network directory over a wireless network, Windows would try to retry, retry and retry the copy and to some extend "block" your wireless network.

As I suspect your wireless Access Point or equivalent has no network management facility, the one "leg"/link trying to copy leave few if no bandwidth to the rest thus leading to your wireless network to disconnect.

    Just a guess.

I don't think the hard drive that they are stored on is the problem; I have had the same issue from two different machines, with the same file!
